Is Pregabalin/Lyrica available in the UK?

Posted by TheOutsider on November 25, 2004, at 13:59:52

I thought that this medication was available in the UK.
I saw a doctor today and he claimed it wasn't, was he wrong? Or is it me.

I think it might be available. My doctor also never heard of it. But when he checked some recent paperes he recieved from the drug administration here in norway, he found the Lyrica update. He read it carefully while I waited and rxed it to me! I am sooo lucky.

Try to call the drug administration in the UK and ask them. The medical bible at your doctor office wont include the Lyrica. He needs to get an update for it.

Lyrica was approved in many europian countries in july. But was markeded first 4 weeks ago. My Lyrica comes form Pfizer Limited, Sandwich, Kent, UK!

Tommorow I will up the dose and see if it's helping my SA.

Take care.

Hi,

Yes is it!
From the pharmaceutical journal...

Lyrica (pregabalin) capsules are being launched into the primary care market on 13 September (Pfizer).

Tommorow I will take 450mg and see what happens. So far it looks good. I read that the effective dose should be above 300mg, so far I took 150mg and 300mg.

I will be more sure in the next few days

My doc knows all about Pregabalin already and i live in England,

he recently prescribed me Gabapentin (yesterday) to add to my clonazepam and said that he would let the Americans be the guinea pigs for Pregabalin before deciding whther or not it would be more effective than gabapentin for me, if gab proves to help any,

slightly harsh i thought, but decent doctors know of its avilability.

Daniel your doctor sounds great. Clonazepam AND gabapentin, I think you're just rubbing it in to all the other English board members!

If you don't mind me asking, is he in the private sector? I'm in the process of changing docs ATM.

Also, was your doctor more willing to try somehting like gabapentin than the a benzo? I'm thinking of asking for it at my next appointment, but I wont get my hopes up if they have the same stigma as klonopin et al.

John :)

Hi jclint,

Dan's doctor is a GP. Encouraging him to prescribe clonazepam was not easy!!

All the best...
Ed.

PS. Sorry Dan for answering for you.

John, the relationship i have with my GP is a very strong one,

Based on his respect for my knowledge in this area regardles of my qualifictions, combined with his considerable empathy for his patients.

I also have had a LOT of problems with serotonin meds in the past and it has taken me about three years to get to a point where he as my GP is prepared to let me do the research, he will listen and if he feels comfortable with it he will let me trial it so long as give it a fair trial and don't expect things to change over night.

The only thing he WONT do is prescribe stimulants even though my appointment with him yesterday actually reaulted in him agreeing that my hypothesis of if EVERYTHING else fails, a stimulant for a SET period of time (we have something in mind and a reason for the hypotheses) would be something to suggest to a pshychiatrist.

I forget the amount of times i have been told in the past to change doctors because things weren't happening as fast as i would like but i didn't because i figured if you can gain a trust with each other and display intelligence and responsibility, every person be it doctor, be it teacher be it manager, wilol eventually be prepared to listen, and thats all these GPs need to do.

Stop thinking of their patients and listen to them. I have managed it through patience and intelligence, but it wasn't easy i assure you.

Right I understand. I'm glad you've got to that position, it must be quite liberating knowing you can act on your own research now. I hope I can forge a relationship simialr to yours.

I have a really excellent GP who has never dismissed my ideas or patronised me, although he is understandably cautious. I think the empathy thing is important. If things with this psychiatrist don't work out I might discuss the option of gabapentin or pregabalin with my GP.

I obviously have no idea of your problems so wont comment on them,

but all i will say is that perseverance and patience, no matter how hard it seems to be, is they key for UK medical help imo.

Often getting referrals to the wrong psychiatrists is very counterproductive, remeber young psychiatrists have been educated to be benzo phobic, so being referred to an up and coming phsychiatrist which seems to be the NHS way at the moment, is often a negative move.

HOWEVER i am also not saying that benzodiazepines are the be all and end all to anxiety conditions. My social and generalised anxiety is not as under control with clonazepam like the Americans on the board will have you believe.

there is a placebo effect going on somehwere along the line. Its good relief don't get me wrong, but not perfection, but again like i said before i don't know what you are finding difficult so i could be barking up the wrong tree.

Just bear in mind to be patient, do research, show intelligence and be prepared to be frustrated at times. You'll get there.
