Effexor-XR and Alcohol

Posted by broadie on October 19, 2004, at 6:01:09

Hey, i'm kind of a young taker of effexor-xr and have been on 75mg a day just over a month now.. Some of the stuff you guys write has actually been pretty helpful, but i was wondering if drinking alcohol whilst on effexor-xr does alot of damage? Do you all do it? Hopefully this isn't a stupid question.. But you all know, i'm in my teenage years and learning from my mistakes. So yeahhh any response would be cool. Thanks!

p.s is it spelled efexor or effexor? :S

Hi Broadie

Either spelling is correct, it just depends where in the world the drug is being produced.

I have been on Effexor XR 150mg for almost 3 months. I am an alcoholic so not drinking was kind of like asking a fish to walk on dry land. As with any medication, particularly anti depressants, it is always advised *not* to drink. It affects some adversely whereas others can drink at will with little or no ill effects. The effect that it has on me is that I have AD & alcohol induced black outs. I may not necessarily be drunk but after a while of drinking, I don't remember a darn thing. It isn't nice. I have done some things in these states that I am not proud of. I have also been working terrifically hard at drinking less.

I have noted on all the research that I have done on Effexor, that it does not interact with alchohol. Be that as it may, drinking is a decision that should be approached with extreme caution. After all, alcohol is a depressent, so it's kind of like defeating the object isn't it? (Strange words coming from someone who drinks)

Hope that helps
Sabrina

Life is difficult enough without alcohol issues... THAT's definitely something you should be learning in your "teenage years".

Alcohol is a "downer"- if you suffer from depression or anxiety, a downer is the LAST thing you should be reaching for as a crutch to get through the teen years. They are hard enough as it is. We all remember- if you need us, just reach out to us instead of a drink. Wish there was something like this around when I was a teen !

hey broadie im an addict and im on effexor-XR 300mg +Dexedrine Spanuales 20mg.

It isnt "life-threatning" to drink on Effexor but drinking will put a hemper on your recovery from deppresion. so if you really want to overcome this i would avoid alcohol.

and to be truely honest if you must do something, smoke MJ, it will effect your mood better.
