Wellbutrin XL dosage

Posted by ANGEL8 on October 15, 2004, at 11:44:09

Hi: I'm a 36 year old female. I have had depression, extreme stress, poor sleep, and severe emotional pms. I take low dose Elavil for my poor sleep. I took Prozac over the holidays last year for only a couple of months. It improved my mood but it caused weight gain, increased the effects of the Elavil(I even lowered the Elavil dose), and the Prozac caused me to be constantly tired. I am now trying WellbutrinXL. First week 150mg, then 2 x 150mg= 300mg a day. Can I take the 300mg all at once in the morning or should I spread the 2 pills out? Wellbutrin has given me so much energy I am waking up early for the first time in my life feeling refreshed and ready to take on the day! I am worried if I spread out the dose that I won't be able to sleep at night. Any suggestions?
Thanks so much!

Yes, you can take 300mgs of Wellbutrin XL at the same time. The XL version of Wellbutrin was specifically designed for once-a-day dosing.

I take Wellbutrin and my daughter also takes it. I think it's the only one she can take that won't make her gain weight. Hawkeye is right, you take it all at once. It's extended release, so if you take some at night, that may start keeping you awake. -L

Thank you for your replies and advice; it was reassuring to hear. I stumbled on to this site quite long ago and have just been watching from afar. Just know that you're all appreciated.
As a public figure I was ashamed to let anyone know that for most of my life I've spent every day off asleep in bed, exhausted for no physical reason. On work days, I couldn't drag myself up and out of bed. However, in such a short time Wellbutrin has made a huge difference in my life. For the first time I am waking up to see the sunrise instead of the sun set! Really!
You are a great bunch of folks to provide such wonderful support for one another! Thank You

Hey Monkey talk, I've had a 2 year road with Wellbutrin. I tried Wellbutrin XL after having weight gain and emotional problems on Prozac. The first 2 weeks of XL, I had an imense great energy, I cleaned my house, stopped procrastinating and had less cravings for junk food (sugar & carbs). But that intense happy energy didn't last long. I had problems with the extended release (the XL version). It seemed as though my body wouldn't process it. I became lethargic, constantly tired, apethetic, aggressive, angry and emotional. The opposite of who I am. I switched to Wellbutrin SR 150 mg which has a shorter release. That worked for a while but I became a little lazy again but most of all I became aggressive or what my family would call "agro". I noticed raging feelings while driving if someone would cut me off. I noticed lashing out at family members for the smallest things. This is NOT something I would normally do. I'm known as a very nice, kind person. So, I now cut the SR 150 dose in half, once a day. I still get a little agro at the end of the day but it's not as severe. But I don't have the energy some people get while on Wellbutrin. The week and a half that I cut the dose in half, I encountered extreme muscle pain and fatigue. I have fibromyalgia and prior to the doseage cut Wellbutrin helped with the pain. After 2 weeks of adjusting that pain subsided. By the way, I have lost 25 pounds in the past year. This was an effort *I* initiated not totally Wellbutrin driven. However, the Wellbutrin helped me resist sugar and carbohydrate cravings. I have not had sugar for one year now. I'm healthier for it. :)
Wellbutrin works differently for everyone. Hopefully it works out for you. Pay attention to any changes within the first 2 to 3 weeks. Talk with your doctor about how to adjust to the best dose that is right for you.
Good Luck!
