Cymbalta-headache

Posted by dazed on October 12, 2004, at 12:21:43

Anybody had headache on Cymbalta?

I have migraines, so I'm prone to headaches with anything new anyway, but I was wondering if anybody else had headaches with it.

Have you tried Ibuprofen (Advil) or Tylenol? I never get headaches, so I don't know. But talk to your doc, like with any side effect.

Frankly, however, I would advise trying to treat it with some anti-headache medicine, hope it goes away, and hope Cymbalta treats your depression.

Some things, like insomnia, for instance, I don't think are worthy reasons to go off a med as powerful and promising as Cymbalta-- things like insomnia are treatable- heck, I can take an amphetamine shortly before bedtime, and because of my techniques like breathing exercises, still fall asleep in minutes. I doubt it will still give you a headache overtime.

Maybe you're taking other medicines too? The only time I got headaches was when I was on 300mg Wellbutrin and 40mg Adderall/day. They both target NE, of course.

I think i remember having a few start-up headaches [nothing major like my old migrainebattles though]. But I haven't really noticed any tension or pressure beyond the first week or so.

I had a headache, morning, noon and night, for 6 days and then they disappeared. Tylenol made them bearable. Currently I'm taking 20 mg. @ 6:00 a.m. Day 34. I hope to increase the dose in about 14 days.

Yep! Headaches all day probably due to stiff neck and muscle tremors and pronounced agitation that I'm experiencing on only Cymbalta 20mg. I also take Desyrel for sleep and I think it's due to their competition for 2D6, probably raising the plasma concentration of Cymbalta. I've got to either decrease the Cymbalta dose even further or change to another sleep med.

Hi....

I've been on 60 cymbalta for 6 days and I've got a constant headache. I am HOPING the headache is related to withdrawing from other meds (I tapered off effexor slowly and am cutting desipramine and elavil in half down to 25mg of each.) The Cymbalta seems to be helping with my chronic vulvar pain, but I can't take this headache! I'd love to hear from anyone with experience or suggestions that might help.

I am really prone to headache. Both neurontin and lamictal were therapeutic for me, but I had to abandon them because of headache. And I'm aware that's an unlikely side effect.

And while I'm complaining... I have a terrific neurologist who is, unfortunately, out of the country right now. My pdoc is great but headache is not his area of expertise and the drug is so new....

Any help out there?

Lia

I'm just glad I googled this thread. my headache has been going on for 4 days; no pain reliever touches it, and my sleep quality is very bad. i am still tapering down effexor whilst increasing the cymbalta. currently at 37.5mg effexor and 60mg cymbalta.
given that others sound like they are having the same symptoms, i think i will stick with is and give it a chance. something to knock the headache would be nice, though.
i've tried ibuprofen, aspirin, and acetimenophen (tylenol) with no joy.

Hi... I've been on Cymbalta 6o for nearly 3 weeks now and my headache has gone. BUT... The reason may be that I went back to taking elavil 50. I have a history of tension headache and elavil treats them well. So that was an answer for me. Might not be for others. I think that there's a good chance of headache as side effect passing.... In reading my old posts, I see that I complained of a headache on effexor for a month. That headache ultimately passed. As far as tolerating the headache... The only OTC stuff that helps me are Excedrin (it's got caffeine) and Alleve.

Good Luck!

Cymbalta headache - still no relief

I'm back on Cymbalta, 30mg, and still experiencing nasty headaches:

Any ideas as to what might combat them?

my medicine headaches (not from cymbalta though...I haven't had any problems there) were well-controlled with Midrin. Its a controlled-substance for some reason, so you'll need to talk to your doc about it, but it worked well for me.

Hey! I think it's a little odd that you have hypertension and take cymbalta (which raises blood pressure, usually only slightly)...have you talked to your doc about some options? What I think might work is some Inderal (propranolol), which is a beta-blocker. It's used used for migraines, tension, trembling, etc. in addition to its FDA-approved use as a blood-pressure lowering agent. I think maybe that, a couple times a day, perhaps in combo with Ibuprofen, Aspirin, or other OTC preparations you can take might do the trick. I WOULD recommend Bextra or Celebrex, which worked great for my normal headaches (in addition to fixing some awful hangovers :=) ), but there's been so much controversy about those lately...still something to think about, though.

Funny enough when I took Inderal years ago as a prophylactic for migraines, it made me severely depressed.
I know we'll eventually find a solution. My p-doc put me back on the Cymbalta because it was working for my depression. However, I find that it only helps with the anxiety at 90mg, and that's what makes my blood pressure go too high. So for now I am on 30mg of Cymbalta and .25mg xanax as needed for anxiety.

Oh man...I'm sorry I don't seem to be able to help you out any :-( At least the cymbalta helps some, though...that's good. I take it as well, and it really is one of the most effective meds I've taken for depression (its at least as good as Tofranil, minus the weight gain and heart weirdness you get from tricyclics). One more suggestion (I'm sure you're getting tired of these, lol)...my mother and I both have migraines, and we both occasionally take Ultram...my doc also OK'd use for the tension headaches from hell I used to get. It's up there with Midrin and Fioricet in my book.

Well, this is pretty simple really, but are you drinking enough water? My headaches on Cymbalta seem to be after I've gone a long time without drinking. (For instance, the worst is early morning just before I get up.)

Just started it 7 days ago w/o fully letting Effexor XR out of my system. Was not sure if headaches were related to Cymbalta or medication change. The health clinic at my new job said my BP was 160/100 and that is very high. Wondering if all is related to Cymbalta. Severe headaces each day about 6 - 8 hours after taking meds. Am also on Strattera but have no knowledge of any of the medications interacting bad.
