lexapro increases panic attacks?

Posted by lanie on September 30, 2004, at 12:30:44

Hi everyone, I am taking lexapro for panic attacks.I also take imipramine. I was on xanax but my doc changed me to klonopin. Well I was taking 10 mgs. of lexapro but still having a bit of panic, so she increased it to 15 mgs. It is now day 6 of 15 mgs. of lexapro. Feel more panic in my head. Bit agoraphobic. Klonopin has relaxed my body but doesn't seem to stop the panic so much in my head. Doc told me to wait 2 weeks to feel better. Has anyone else had this problem? Does the panic go away? I am so sick of it. Plus I have a headache from the lexapro. Appreciate any advise. Thanks

Headaches are a se I had when starting Lex, took Tylenol migraine for it. Mine went away after 3wks. Had increase in panic attacks around wk 4-5 and increased from 5 to 10mg, panic did go away. Took 9wks before I could tell Lex was working.

Hang in there!~~~8|8

Oh boy, does Lexapro ever increase PA's. Lex had me climning the walls for 3 weeks before I ditch it. It's unacceptable to be medically agitated for 3 weeks, IMHO.

I gave Lexapro a good 12 weeks, and panic and anxiety never got better.

Lexapro might be good for depression but I think is the worst SSRI for boosting anxiety and panic, how it ever got approved for anything other than depression is beyond me.

I figured 12 weeks to be a fair shot at seeing if this agitation would go away and if anything got worse, including neck and shoulder tension.

I am very happy with Lexapro. I have unipolar depression and Lexapro took care of that after 45 days. It is 4 months later and I am still depresssion free. Please give Lex at least 6 or 7 weeks before you give up on it. Lex has been an excellent AD for me. The only side effect is insomnia for which I take either benadryl or Serouqel. I had anxiety along with the depression. The headaches will subside. I no longer have headaches from taking Lex.

You might like to try something besides Imipramine too, it's not really known for it's anxiolytic preperties. Clomiparmine, Nortriptyline or Amitriptyline would be much better choices.

Cheers,
Paul.

I my case it increased my anxiety and that never resolved itself.

I found Celexa to be much more easy to take, with less side effects, then Lexapro myself.

Hope that helps.

Sorry to butt in, but could you tell me if the Celexa stopped the anxious thoughts in your head? Also, how long did it take to work. I started Celexa about 3 1/2 weeks ago (1 week at 10 mg, 1 week on 20 mg and now at 30 mg) after weaning off Effexor XR for two weeks. I am still feeling a bit anxious (but the increased anxiety could be from the Depo Provera shot I had at the beginning of August). Anything you can tell me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

I've been diagnosed with panic disorder(w/agoraphobia) for over ten years now. I'm 33. Initially I took Celexa along with an ocasional .05 of Xanax as needed during an attack. Twice during the last ten years this totally cured my symptoms enough for me to stop the medication after about a year or two. I'd be fine for a few years then I'd relapse. I'm currently in my third setback. I'm now taking 20mg of Lexapro and 1mg. of Xanax XR (a new long lasting Xanax) and I feel 95% better. Eventually I know I'll decrease the Xanax XR and stop it. I may remain on the Lexapro indefinitley this time seeing my pattern of setback over the last 13 years. Please feel free to email me for any addtional info.

Thanks so much for the response. It is reassuring for me to hear that you had success on Celexa for the same things I have been struggling with for a number of months.
