How long for Effexor XR to work?

Posted by SadWren on September 2, 2004, at 5:46:17

I am on my 20th day of taking Effexor XR for depression and have not noticed any positive change yet. I was on 37.5mg for a week, then 75 mg for a week, now 112mg this past week and 150mg next week. How long did it take you to see a change? Do I just need to be more patient? (this is my first AD as my depression became very bad recently). I would rather cut it sooner than later if it is ineffective, given all the withdrawal horror stories.

Also, in addition to insomnia that is worse than before Effexor, I have this weird side effect where the backs of my upper arms feel cold and prickly underneath the skin. Even when the outer skin is not cold, they feel cold. Anyone know what I am talking about? Any solutions?

Thanks,

Wren

Hi SadWren

I have been taking Efexor XR for about a month. I started at 75mg and just yesterday upped to 150mg. Even though I have a bunch of niggling side effects, I am lucky that it has stabilised by depression very well. I expect to only see the full benefit in 6 to 8 weeks time. Please hang in there a bit longer. 20 days is still early and you will probably begin to feel some benefits once your full dosage has been reached. Chat to your pdoc though about not sleeping, perhaps they can help.

Take care
Sabrina

I agree with Sabrina - 20 days isn't very long for giving this med a go. It actually took me a long time to feel the full benefits (4 months) but this was the 7th AD I have been on and I'm grateful I stuck with it. Make a note of your side effects and try to keep a journal about your moods - it might help you and your doctor assess how you're doing on it.
