College /HighSchool Graduation Anxiety /Depress.

Posted by Violet4EVR on September 2, 2004, at 0:26:00

Hey all, Sorry if this post is a repeat....my computer is being weird....

I was just curious about this....I did not suffer from any anxiety or depression, prior to graduating college....

Within a few months of facing "The Real World" I began to develop panic attacks and anxiety problems.

Did anyone else go from "being fine" before graduating high school or college, and then develop anxiety or depression upon graduating high school or college?

Thank you so very much,
Violet

Hi, I suffered the same thing...although I think I'm a special case, as I lived in England for high school, moved back to the states for college, then when my family moved back to the midwest, I switched colleges from Vermont to Michigan, so I went through a significannt change after I graduated, and all of teh sudden here I am in MIchigan with not a single friend, working with older people whom I don't really click with, and not going to school with opportunities to meet new friends.

Hi Violet,
Yes, I struggled quite a bit with the transitions of both leaving HS and college. It is probably when I first really experienced depression/anxiety. I think it happens to a lot of people, actually. My sister is going through something similar with leaving college and establishing an "identity" as someone other than a student. I found that my depression got better a year or so after I settled into my first job, but recently has returned when I got married and moved away from my family. Change is difficult and very anxiety producing for some people.
Im sorry you are struggling. At least you are not alone. I have found that therapy, talking, taking things one day at a time and exercise help me. Are you seeing a therapist or on any meds? Perhaps an anti-anxiety med would get you over the hump?
Hang in there; sorry for the novel:)
Jessie

hi there,
i definitely feel what you're going through. i just graduated from college, and i have no job nor am i starting grad school now. i spent a year on medical leave, and it was an accomplishment just to graduate with my class. but here i am, back at home, a coast away from all my college friends, and not knowing what to do next. not only is the change hard, but the uncertainty is sometimes overwhelming as well. plus, this is just a difficult age to be. at 21/22, you're not a teenager anymore, but i, anyway, don't feel like a real adult, either. depending on my mood and attire, i can look like i'm in high school or like someone older. this transition period just sucks, i think, even for those people who go straight on to jobs and more school. i wish you the best, and keep posting! it's good to know we're not alone. cb
