Need advise NOW!!! Nortryptiline + Nardil

Posted by ace on August 30, 2004, at 22:09:02

OK, tonight I am going to my doctors and am going to take 25mg Nortriptyline to my Nardil (60mg), Zyprexa (2.5mg) and Xanax (2mg)

I have concerns. Nortyptiline is weakly serotonergic but acts strongly on noradrenaline (norepinephrine)

1. Parnate- cause me severe depression- more noradrenergic than Nardil

2. Reboxetine- Totally noradrenergic- caused me deprssion.

3. Clomipramine- quite noradrenergic- caused depression...

I hope I'm not setting myself up for a depression relapse.

Please, all comments and/or corrections wanted!!!

Also, good luck sentiments!!!!

Ace
Nardil- 60
Zyprexa - 2.5
Xanax- 2mg

hi, ace, :)

i love your enthusiasm! you need advice now, huh? well, i'll *try* and help, although i don't know much about these meds. i am a bit confused..if you haven't done well on noradrenergic drugs before, then why are you adding nortiptyline? what are you trying to achieve by adding this med?

amy :)

hey ace, king vultan and sad panda are your guys for this one....this from one of my texts, so take it as you will: ``When used with MAO inhibitorsm hyperpyrexia, hypertension, tachycardia, confusion, seizures and deaths have been reported (serotonin syndrome).'' ref is Lexi-Comp's Drug Information Handbook, 12th edition, 2004-2005, Lacy et al. editors, ISBN 1-59195-083-X. ask the experts, as this kind of thing might not be all it's cracked up to be....and in response to your invite below, you have my best wishes and many thanks....be well, tjm

Hi Ace.

You have suggested in the past that Nardil sufficiently treated your depression and much of your OCD, and that you were looking for something to treat residual OCD symptoms. What are you attempting to address with nortriptyline?

Exactly that...my remaining 30% or so of OCD and hopefully it will act as an anti-anxiety too.

Studies have show combine with Clomipramine Nortriptyline produces more of a robust anti-OCD effect than Clomipramine alone.

I started on 25mg last night- felt nothing, no adverse effects, nothing. But my doc believes we will have to push it up to 75mg for an adequate trial...have you got any suggestions?

Thanks Scott,
Ace

That's fascinating. Psychopharmacology can be so cool sometimes.

No. I think you have everything well under control. You may want to use orthostatic hypotension as a guide as to how quickly you raise the dosage of nortriptyline. I wouldn't push too hard if you are having trouble standing up. :-)

I wish you luck. I think this combination is very worth your while to try. Just be on the alert for muscle rigidity/dystonia and altered mental status, as these were the symptoms of SS that first emerged when I tried combining the two drugs.

I'm not a cheerleader for Risperdal, but I hope you still have it on your list. It might not help, but you would find out very quickly whether it does or not. Research it a little first. You'll find some conficting opinions on its worth in treating OCD, but the literature to be found on Medline is encouraging.

This might seem far out - what about pindolol?

I agree...just have to convince my doctor.
