Parnate and Exercise

Posted by Pryor8 on August 31, 2004, at 15:53:14

I'm only at about 1 week at 40 mg, but since starting Parnate have had this happen: I'm usually able to force myself to exercise even just a little bit. Now, it's as if the "leaden paralysis" is worse than ever. Motivation to exercise was always a challenge, but now I can't even PHYSICALLY do it!! A stationary bike or machine, or whatever it is. My limbs don't let me move! Any experience with this? Thanks,

I had this problem on nortriptyline and to a lesser and somewhat different extent on Nardil. I recall the first day after I took nortriptyline that I could barely walk up the stairs, and it took a massive effort to jog at even two thirds my normal speed. The problem did ameliorate over time; I would stick it out if you can. On Nardil, I noticed a loss in energy that impacted the rate at which I could exercise, particularly at the beginning of the run. I always attributed this to the drop in blood pressure and heart rate that the Nardil bestowed upon me. Have you checked your BP and pulse since going on the Parnate?

I had a terrible time excercising on Parnate. My reflexes seemed delayed and I had trouble with dizziness getting on and off the machines at the gym. Plus, since I had terrible insomnia during the night, I would fall asleep at my desk at 4 pm everyday. Trying to find the energy to go the gym after work, as is my custom, was just too hard most days. I can't remember if I was running then, probably not, but was able to muster some long walks. Needless to stay, I didn't stay on it, but I tried for at least a month, 'cause it was supposed to be such a powerful depressant, something that hits all the synapses. Well, it didn't for me, and of course, I was depressed over not being able to complete my normal excercise!

Thanks for feedback folks. I think the trouble exercising is caused by the funky blood pressure changes Parnate causes. I seem a little better in the morning so will try to motivate then for biking rather than evening. I'm the same come late afternoon: dead to world, zoned out, almost asleep. I got the same way on Nardil last year. Like clockwork, BP plummets in afternoon and I"m useless.

It's been barely a week at full dose so I'll give it some time, try to adapt. So far this is only nasty Parnate side effect. No massive weight gain (so far) like on Nardil, which happened even with strict, low calorie diet.

If anyone has ideas that work for perking up these afternoon MAOI lulls, please share! Caffeine doesn't make a dent.

Both MAOIs are notorious for causing afternoon drowsiness. I had a lot of trouble with this on Nardil until I solved the insomnia problems I was having. I don't know if this is true for everybody, but in my case, the "Nardil Nod" was a simple case of not getting enough sleep. For anyone experiencing problems sleeping on MAOIs, I think some kind of sleep aid is mandatory.
