Med success, then poop out, re-start the med?

Posted by TomV on August 29, 2004, at 21:56:14

I've had a long history of med failures for treatment resistent depression, but I finally found some relief in Remeron, @ 37.5 mg. I had tried just about all the 1st and 2nd line meds, and some alternative treatments, and never came close to the same success that I did with Remeron. I stayed on Remeron for about 2 years, with decent success, but the last 7 or 8 months had diminishing returns. The med finally "pooped out" altogether. I tried increasing the med (to 45 mgs)with no success before I gave up on it entirely.

My question is, it's been about 6 months since I stopped taking any med, and am not sure what to try next. I'm thinking about an MAOI (not thrilled about the dietery restrictions, even though I'm hopeful it could help). My Pdoc is ok with this. I'm also thinking about re-trying the Remeron. Is this just wishful thinking? A waste of time? Has anyone had success re-taking a med after poop out and a long vacation from that specific med?

My guess is it couldn't hurt but I'm curious if anyone has any ideas.

thanks,
TomV

I also took Remeron, but for a short while. The weight gain freaked me out and I stopped. When depression/anxiety became too much I decided to try it again, and it did not work. However, I came across some info on fish oil and started taking 1.5 grams of epa fish oil daily along with 30mg of Remeron. It made the med work, somehow. I don't know the mechanics of it, but you might look into it.
Best wishes,

An increase from 37.5 to 45 mg seems like too small of an increase to just give up on. Try it again and try going higher than 45 if needed before quitting.
