Cymbalta at Walgreens Pharmacies

Posted by Mr. Scott on August 17, 2004, at 20:55:31

Well...

It's here. Anyone taking it yet? I called my doc tonight to let him know it's been shipped and received by walgreens according to the pharmacist they are unpacking it and can fill it.

Are you going to try it, Scott? Is there any benefits to this new antidepressant like it doesn't cause weight gain or effect libido? Also, isn't this med classified in the same class as Effexor?

I don't know anything about this new med.

understand how it can be so different from effexor. I hope it is though. I may have to try it after awhile. I'm anxious to see how people react to it.

where are you located Scott? I called my local Walgreens here in Illinois and they said they don't have it and don't have any info on when they'll receive it.

I live in New Jersey. My local CVS pharmacy called their wholesaler today to order it for me. I was told that it would be in tomorrow. I'll let you know.

Sometimes, a single atom can make all the difference in the world, and scientists don't really know why (yet).

Hi.

Cymbalta has shown in clinical trials to cause a good deal less sexual side effects than SSRI's or Effexor. Some reports say none at all. Weight gain was not noted either, but a lot of us have heard these things before...I know. What makes Duloxetine (Cymbalta) unique is that it has a far more balanced ratio of Norepinephrine to Serotonin re-uptake. For some reason this makes it potentially useful for pain and the lack of motivation that is either caused by ssri's or untreated by ssris. So folks with fibromyalgia like me or those with lupus may benefit far more than with ssris or low dose effexor. Effexor requires a dose of at least 150mg to even touch Norepinephrine reuptake. At which point I am in side effect hell. Can't speak for the rest. Cymbalta hits Norepinephrine right off the bat. It is the closest thing besides Ixel(milnacipran) that combines TCA efficacy and ssri tolerabilty into one pill. I know thats a broad statement and will certainly apply across the entire population. It is available at the Walgreens in Deerfield, Illinois. My Internist said he hasn't been detailed yet on the product and that he anticipates 2 months before he will write for it. Goto cymbalta.com to see Lilly's marketing info and PI if you want. I have reason to be hopeful. At least it's another ordinant in the arsenal..

Thanks. Really.

I had the pharmacist order Cymbalta yesterday. She claimed that it would arrive by 5:00pm today, but we'll see. My doctor wrote for 30mg pills. I will be taking 30mg per day for a week and then move up to 60mg. After that, I will wait two more weeks, respond, remit, and live happily ever after.

Cymbalta - why it's hard to know

Yes, it is true that Cymbalta works like Effexor and has a different ratio of 5-HT/NE -- but as for the side effect profile, what do we know? All of the info is from studies sponsored by Lilly -- in fact all drug studies are these days. And what turns my stomach is that Cymbalata has to be taken bid -- but I'm sure that in a few years, to extend their patent -- Lilly will "magically" find a way to come up with an extended release version. Of couse, they don't come out with this now, b/c it would limit their patent to 7 years (until they get a new indication of course). The truth is, few of the drug companies are investing in truly innovative drugs b/c of the risk/benifit ratio. So every couple of years, another prozac imposter comes along that claims to have fewer side effects -- and since all the FDA requires, de facto, is better than placebo -- well it's no suprise that they get approved.

What I'd like to see, is a "CATIE" like study of the antidepressants -- where the industry could be left out. Just my 2 cents.

Hi Scott,

Just returned from la la land, post-2nd surgery, and saw that you had quit Zonegran and started Cymbalta. So sorry to hear the Zonegran didn't work out! But how brave of you to give it a 2nd go! And now on to Cymbalta! This is my next drug of choice if (most likely, when) my Effexor stops working (going on 5years now...). So, keep us updated on your progress...we're all keeping our fingers crossed!

Good luck,
Sooshi

YOU TOOK FIRST DOSE OF CYMBALTA AND NO FOLLOW UP?? » SLS

I woke up this morning expecting this thread to be lit up since you posted taking your first dose of Cymbalta. Was your first dose good, bad? I'm currently taking only Lamictal at 150mg. I see my pdoc this Thursday and I want to add an antidepressant. Since Cymbalta's new and suppose to be a true dual I was thinking about asking for it, but want some feedback because I have heavy anxiety and if this med has radical initial side effects I may not want to. Post when you get a chance. I called my local Walgreens and they said they have the 30mg and 60mg of Cymbalta in stock.

I really didn't know what to write about.

How's this for a start:

8/20/2004

First dose - 30mg

No side effects.

I felt a small "blip" improvement that lasted for a few hours beginning an hour after dosing.

I was reluctant to post this because the interpretation of this observation is confounded by the fact that I have just finished weaning from high-dosage imipramine. I almost always experience a positive rebound improvement from discontinuing TCAs. It would be difficult to conclude what to attribute this post-dose experience to.

8/21/2004

Second dose - 30mg

I did not experience the same sort of positive response that I did yesterday. However, it is not uncommon for someone to experience a brief improvement during the first 3 days of beginning a new antidepressant, only to watch it disappear and re-emerge several weeks later. This is a good sign in most cases.

So, no high anxiety, "can't go out in public because I feel strange" initial side effects? Can you compare the first couple of days to starting any other new generation antidepressants?

Also, are you taking 30mg once daily? I noticed in the Cymbalta prescribing info they say lower doses take twice daily, then if you take 60mg you can take it once daily. What is your target dose?
