prozac anyone??????

Posted by woolav on July 21, 2004, at 12:07:01

I just got a script for prozac today. Never took it before. I have been on celexa, serzone, effexor, paxil and zoloft in the past years. But they all stop working. I am also taking lamictal and xanax. Hopefully, the three together will work. Any advise about prozac would help. I dont know what to expect.
thanks!

I took Prozac for over 7 years. It is the very first AD I took. At that time over 10 years ago, it saved my life. Because of chronic low back pain, I became very depressed. However, within 3 weeks of taking Prozac, my unipolar depression (no mania), started to lift and in 6 weeks, my depression was all but gone. I was able to return to work on a part time basis. Currently, I am taking Lexapro which is a combination of Prozac and Celexa. Supposedly, a lot of the bad side effects, ie., decreased libido, weight gain, etc., have been minimized. So far in my 6 weeks of taking Lexapro, my libido is normal and I am not gaining weight. I do notice that I have less of an appetite. However, I am still having some insomnia and fatigue, but they both seem to be decreasing. I was taking it in the morning initially, but now that I am taking it around 3PM, I don't seem to have the intense insomnia that I had when taking it first thing in the morning. Good luck.

why did you switch to lexapro?
Also, I heard that prozac has less of a tendency to poop out (like everything else ive tried) so I hope that is true. I have that long term depression that never goes away, so i need something that will continue to work. I take xanax also, so that helps me sleep at night. I do feel more awake with the prozac now, (i do take it in the morning with lamictal) but once i take the xanax at bedtime, i sleep.
thanks for responding.

Prozac pooped out on me even after augmenting with desipramine, lamictal, lithium, wellbutrin and remeron. I have to say Lexapro has finally kicked in and my depression is all but gone, just like Prozac did for me for 7 years. Hopefully, Lexapro will last at least 7 years like Prozac if not more. I am in my 6th week of Lexapro and it has finally kicked in. The first couple of weeks were horrible as Lex made me so tired, unable to sleep and even more depressed. I am sure glad I hung in there. I still have some insomnia and some fatigue but I will take that over depression any time. Good luck.

Glad to hear lexapro is working for you. My pdoc mentioned that, but thought i should try prozac first. That is what i am looking for is something that will work for years. I am so tired of switching every 3-5 months. But at least I know that I have an option later on if prozac poops on me.

thanks

I have been taking Prozac for a few years now, for OCD. It works well for me and I have hardly any side effects. It worked pretty fast, like a miracle. So I guess I am definitely a Prozac success story! :-)

Me too! It works great for my depression, when none of the others would. I find that its more 'stimulating' than any other AD. I have to take it in the morning or I'd have trouble sleeping. I also take Wellbutrin, which gives me even more energy than Prozac alone, but it can increase anxiety. If it gets too bad I have to take a Xanax. In spite of that, I feel the Prozac/Wellbutrin combo works better than anything else I've used.

Rather than use Xanax every night for sleep (because of potential addiction), I take Trazadone (I think I spelled that right). Its an old AD that just makes you sleepy, and its not addictive. I take Xanax on an as needed basis, but I try to be careful with it and not take it everyday if I don't have to.

I hope the Prozac works out for you, but if it doesn't, don't be discouraged. Its worth it when you find the right combination.
