Question- Luvox and Trazodone combo SE

Posted by cpallen79 on July 21, 2004, at 13:47:24

Hi all, I recently starterd to take Luvox (was on Lexapro prior- yesterday was my first day on the Luvox). I have also recently started taking Trazodone about a week or so ago as well for sleep. So far, I really like the trazodone... except for one thing. Combined with Luvox, it's a heck of alot stronger acting!!!! For example, I took my one pill of Trazodone yesterday and within 30 minutes, I felt intoxicated! I had an elevated heart rate, and was dizzy, yet at the same VERY VERY tired (if that makes sense!)... Slept soundly (despite the overwhelming heat here in MN). What the heck?? At any rate, I can take a 1/2 tab or full tablet of Trazodone according to my PDOC... should I jsut go down to a small dose (half a tab)... i mean, I guess the feeling massively drunk was a little disconcerting AND I'm suppsoed to increase my Luvox dose over the next couple of weeks. Wno knows, maybe i won't need the Trazodone afterall... any insight as to why the trazodone would feel so much stronger... maybe it's just my imagination.

hello there, chemist here....i am cribbing from one of my texts in reporting that luvox may increase serum concentrations of (among lots of other things) trazodone. you might want to reduce the dose of trazodone - in consult with your doctor, of course - if the feeling persists. all the best, chemist

Hey Chemist!
Welcome back, you've been much missed this week! I will halve my dosage of trazodone (PDOC is totally cool with it). I'm upping my Luvox in the next couple of weeks so god only knows how that would feel!

hello there, chemist here...well, thank you for the kind words of welcome! do remember that there is a wide dosing range for luvox, and that it is not at all unpleasant to increment your dose by as little as 50 mg qd each week. i have found that spending one week or so on an increased dose - until the target is reached - in this way results in the onset of little to no untoward side effects. i also note that, as the titration continues, divided doses throughout the day can relieve one of some of the transient (yet bothersome) side effects (this is anecdotal from my experiences, naturally: you might very well find a different and effective course is more attractive to you and merits your doctor's approval). do give it a chance, as a 6 to 8 week titration is what i have personally found to be the time it takes to ``settle in,'' as it were, although that is my experience (on 2 occasions, several years apart) and i would dare not generalize. i do hope it works out for you, and please keep us posted! all the best, chemist

Hey Chemist, thanks for the response. Our goal is to hit 200 MGS of Luvox. I'm supposed to go at a rate of 50 MGs every 7 days or so, so hopefulyl that will be slow enough, and If I have problems I can slow down. One thing I'm very happy about is that Lexapro taper down was done so carefully by my PDOC that I have had little discomfort. I'm sure I may feel icky as it clears my system but at least I haven't been in total misery.

hello there, chemist here...your plan (and your doctor's) is exactly what i have done on both occassions, so it's one heck of a coincidence or we've been passing each other on the way in and out of our appointments with the same doctor! if you respond as i have - both times, and no so-called ``poop out'' manifested itself (in my case) for the first go 'round, which was several years - then i ought to think you'll be pleasantly surprised. as always, best wishes, and keep those updates coming! chemist

Luvox inhibits a lot of different enzymes, this is the reason I put it to the back of the list. Trazodone is kind of wacky like that too, I think it might raise Luvox levels. You will probably need a lower doseage of both drugs.

Cheers,
Panda.

It sounds like we're both on good tracks Chemist. I've heard good things abotu Luvox, so I'm excited. Trazodone so far has been great for me, so hoepfulyl everythign will stay on track... Of course I always have "mother's little helpers" on hand too :)

hello there, chemist here...thank you for the kind words in your previous post to Sad Panda and me...as i have noted, luvox has been nothing short of a very effective remedy for me, and it sounds as though it is doing the job for you, as well. again, please keep us posted - as i will you - in regards to well-being. i have oscillated (fyi) between 200 and 300 mg/day in divided doses, and found that (as i have stated before) one needs to adjust the dose with this particular drug more so than for others: hence, be patient and work with your doctor to find the optimal dose required. all the best, chemist
