topamax to zonegran

Posted by jessie77 on July 21, 2004, at 8:35:47

I am currently on 3oo mg topamax and would like to give zonegran a try. My doctor has never heard of it and at my last visit said he "think about it and we'll see in a month". Im unhappy with the anti-depressant (or lack of) effects from the topamax and was a little annoyed by his attititude. How long would the weening off period from the topamax onto the zonegran take if he decides to give it a try?

THanks! Sorry to be so impatient. Im just so tired if trying to find the right "fit".

I switched from Topomax to Zonegran overnight. Stopped 300 mg of Topomax on Thursday, Started 100 mg Zonegran on Friday, 200 mg next Friday, 300 next Friday and stayed there. I like Zonegran much better. Just easier on side effects, less stupids.

I take it for migraines, so I don't know about anti-depressant effect it has. My dr. had never tried it either, but was willing to let me try it because he loved the fact that I was getting relief for my migraines with the Topomax and had heard that the side effects were much less with the Zonegran, but had the same good theraputic results.

Hope that helps some.

I started taking Zonegran three weeks ago. I've been at 200mg in an effort to treat bipolar depression. I have two side effects. I itch all over after I take hot showers and I experience profound fatigue all day long. The fatigue was a real surprise.

Hi Jessie77,

I tapered very quickly off the Topa without any problems and went right on to the Zonegran. I am having no side effects at all from it, and am getting excellent anti-depressant effects from it too. I only wish it worked this well for everyone!!

Don't let your doctor's attitude get in the way of your desire to try something different that might truly help you! Be insistent that you would like to give this a try because the Topamax just isn't working for you (it actually has the common side effect of CAUSING depression.....).

Good luck to you,
Sooshi
