slight involuntary muscle movements on prozac

Posted by mike lynch on July 18, 2004, at 0:12:03

I've been taking prozac for about 3 weeks now and just recently I noticed these involuntary muscle contractions (the muscle would like tighten up) It would mostly be in my leg, it is really suddle. Watching T.V. and other stimulating activities that involve things moving around seems to trigger the movements even more sometimes moving my eyes does to..

Is this something that may go away..or is it a sign of the beginning of something more serious?

I took Prozac for over 7 years and was actually prescribed 100mg which is 20mg more then the recommended maximum dosage. For me the twitches were mainly in my legs especially just before I fell asleep, you know when you are so relaxed you are ready to sleep. Sometimes my whole body would twitch, like one big involuntary muscle movement. I call them twitches. They will continue, but for me it was a sign that the Prozac is doing its thing. After 7 years, Prozac pooped out and was no longer effective. But everyone is different. Your body will get used to the leg twitch. It is a minor inconvenience considering Prozac took my depression away for all those years. I am currently on Lexapro which is a combination of Prozac and Celexa. I have only been on it for 6 weeks and have not felt the full effects of it yet, although it has lifted my unipolar depression somewhat. Good luck to you.

Thanks..I was just worried cause I know SSRI'S are associated with movement disorders that sometimes persist even after cessation..this doesent' seem like anything of that sort since they really are suddle and do seem to subside in a couple hous after I take the dose..

Hi
I am one of the people who prove that 'rare side effects' like movement disorders do happen. They began as soon as I started taking Prozac and got worse and worse instead of better and better as time went on. They got somewhat better as soon as I stopped taking Prozac... I stayed on several months because my doctor insisted movement problems were extremely rare and he had never actally heard of it happening.
It has been about 8 years or so since I stopped taking Prozac and I continue to have movement problems. They are severe enough to affect my entire life.
Prozac was the only SSRI I had taken. I have been on other antidep with no lasting effects.
I would say as long as the movement problems do not get any worse, or interfere with your daily lifestyle, you will probably be ok. Mine were extremely severe and simply did not get better with time.
Yours sound pretty mild. Plus you said they tend to get better a couple of hours after taking it. I wouldn't worry...but only you know exactly what you feel like. Use your instinct, that feeling in your gut that tells you something is really not right. If you do decide to stop....beware of taking another SSRI. There are many other meds out there.
Take care

Prozac caused them (I also take Zyprexa which is also known to cause involuntary movement) but at each medication increase I feel some involuntary muscle spasm of the tongue (it feels like my tongue is trying to jump off my month) and of the biceps (my biceps is like "pulsating" on it on).
