Pdocs Rx'ing Ambien??

Posted by Laree on July 14, 2004, at 20:54:10

Anyone here on Ambien (for sleep problems) from their pdoc?
I am now currently between primary care doctors, out last month's script, yet need the med. for sleep.
Any suggestions? thanks!

Hello!

Many pdocs prescribe Ambien. Mine does and my past pdoc's have too.

I saw a pdoc who prescribed me Ambien. I hate him for it. I wish he talked me out of being so obsessed with thinking I needed a med for sleep. I would have done better realizing sleep anxiety was a warning sign for my depression/anxiety.

If it's only sleep onset insomnia, you don't need Ambien. You need to realize that with breathing exercises, it's impossible for your brain to have thoughts fast enough to delay sleep onset.

And if it's sleep onset insomnia, it's rarely something besides anxiety or depression causing it. And that's more important to deal with.

I beg your pardon? I use CD's of natural sounds for sleep; I meditate, I feel myself breathing for hours, buddy, before I got this prescription. This was the last thing I asked for and the best thing I got.

relax! breathe! meditate! but please don't hold angst against me, I wasn't critizing you at all.

but I do think more work on self-hypnosis tapes make prove valuable to you-- not that I am critizing-- I'm saying it helped me, so I hope it helps you!!!

I want you to feel better, not fill yourself with angst against me!

But I think more self-hypnosis may help you... your message, if you read it, doesn't sound like you were meditating at the time ;)

relax, we're all here to help you!!

I'm not sure CDs help insomnia-- have you tried a self-hypnosis tape that trains you on breathing exercises? I did, and after a few months of using it NIGHTLY, it finally worked.

Patience is the only drug worth prescribing. =)

by the way, we aren't judging your sleep habits, we're giving you tips, and that's different! =)

But I am concerned that your message indicates you have anxiety overlapping with your sleep onset issues. But don't mind me, just observing.

Anxiety issues

Anxiety sure makes it hard to get to sleep to begin with. Before Ambien I was waiting for 2 hours each night to fall alseep, and then woke up every hour on the hour.
(my dx is BP2, GAD, and panic attacks)
Meditation is starting to become easier to do. I'm using a Deepak Chopra CD.
And I'm sorry for being touchy. As soon as I posted I knew I shouldn't have.

Hey PC,
I'm with you. Ambien has been the only thing to help if I have insomnia of any type. I have tried everything else-all night for many nights. Ambien let me get the sleep I needed with very little drowsiness in the morning. Take care-M4L
