Posted by 1980Monroe on July 18, 2004, at 19:22:26

My brother has been stressing out about a case he has with one of his clients.

He's been on Ambien, Sonata, Ativan, right now Xanax, i had some other posts asking about Amytal, which is a barbiturate but i dont know if it is used for insomnia since it lasts 6 hours.

Does anyone have opnions?

Insomnia may be a symptom of untreated depression. In this case something like trazodone or sinequan will work extremely effectivly.

Other than this try an even mor potent benzodiazapine like temazapam or flurazapam.

Seroquel and trazodone are another option.

zopiclone

Halcion (triazolam) or Restoril (temazepam). Halcion is better for initiating sleep; Restoril is better for maintaining sleep. My understanding is that the atypical antipsychotic Seroquel is also extremely sedating.

Currently I've been under a lot of stress and I do have a history of insomnia; however, it has gotten to the point where I can't sleep AT ALL at least 2-3 night (maybe more) per week. I'm not currently on anything for insomnia.
Seroquel was the most effective sleep-inducing medication for me. It made it prettymuch 'impossible' for me to fight falling sound asleep, but it also gave me horrendous hangovers!
Serax (oxazepam) may also work...it is in the same class as Xanax (benzodiazepines). Benzos are also used for anxiety, which it sounds as if your brother is having difficutlies with. Xanax XR (extended-release version of Xanax), Valium, or a longer-acting benzo might be a better fit for nighttime when he needs to get some sleep!
The right medication depends on the exact predicament. Is his problem falling asleep, staying asleep, or both?
Best,
L.

Short term Mogadon(Nitrazepam)is a strong benzo for sleep. Remeron, Doxepin & AP's like Seroquel & Zyprexa are potent antihistamines that will knock you out.

Long term, the 5-HT2A blockers are probably the only way to go. These are most TCA's, most AP's, Trazodone, Remeron, Periactin, etc.

Cheers,
Panda.
