COMING OFF OF SERZONE OR NEFAZODONE HELP

Posted by Tony C. on June 22, 2004, at 12:15:33

Hi, ha anyone ever completely got off of Serzone or Nefazodone ? If so please tell me the dosage you took, how long and what your experience was. I was into day 21 of reducing, I was down to about a 20 mg reduction, all went well till yesterday, a family problem pissed me off and made me depressed, I felt like I was not here, my head in a cloud, and like I was going to have an anxiety attack, so I took reg dose, but I want to stick it out. Anyone can tell me there experience, and I mean coming off and not going to another Medicine. I will aprreciate it.

Tony,
My mom quit cold turkey and had no problems whatsoever. i have talked to a few that have weaned off slowly and had very little problems as well. Remember that it is normal to be somewhat depressed or anxious in life--family issues set me off too. When I feel pangs of an anxiety attack coming on it also makes me want to increase my meds! But I have to remind myself that anxiety is an indicator that something is wrong or depressing me and needs to be addressed (it is a normal part of life and is not meant to hurt us)....we've all heard this before...sometimes I just need a reminder, and I thought you might appreciate one too! Life's no fun if medication numbs our emotions completely, right? :) Good luck weaning off your meds--try to stay relaxed and don't mess with yourself--i think a lot of us sit around and wait for withdrawal symptoms and side effects to happen and in this way we MAKE them happen ourselves. Oh the power of the mind! :) Don't get me wrong..I know there are withdrawal symptoms and side effects it is just that us sensitive people like to make it harder for ourselves....So frustrating. My doctor advised me to take about three months to slowly wean off serzone/nefazodone when I decide to. I have decided to stay on my full dose for the next few months--a huge life change is about to take place and I don't want to go off my meds, freak out and fail---looks like the generic will be around for awhile anyway. Once again, GOOD LUCK. Do some yoga, watch your sugar, alcohol, nicotine and caffeine and do lots of nice things for yourself! :)
Amy

My mom was taking 350 mg. a day , probably for four or five years, i think. i am at the same dose and have been for almost four years. Good times, good times. When i started i increased the dose by 25 mg. every week or so. That is the same increment I plan to use to wean off too. Do you plan on going to another medication? I am going to try and overhaul my life in the next year and go without for awhile (stop drinking, increase exercise have healthy relationships, etc.). We shall see though. It is hard to for me to do those things when I am too depressed to get out of bed and meds can really help with that! :) hehe. Good luck!

Thanks for your reply, it gives me hope. Yes I did have a little wierdness hear and there, I just need to stop my mind from getting the better of me. You mean your mom took 400mg a day for 5 years and quit cold turkey ?

I did notice with the 20mg reduction a benefit was I was thinking about sex more, my libido was coming back a little bit, that is what I want most my FULL libido back. I mean I am going slow, these symptoms shoudn't last right ? Foggy, staring into space for a few moments but not depressed.

Thanks for your reply

1 Doctor told me he NEVER thinks they will remove Generic Serzone, cause it has helped so many.

Sincerely - Tony C.

Greetings
I have successfully come off of Serzone - it took me about 6 months, and I used a small dose (10 mg) of Prozac in the morning, and a small dose (.5 mg of Ativan) in the evening - but I did get off of it, then off the Ativan and now all I take is 10 mg of Prozac. I had extreme anxiety and I needed to get off the Serzone, because of trying to get pregnant - but all seems to be well for the time being. I tapered down 25 mg every two weeks.
Good luck\

How long did you take it (SERZONE) and what was your dosage before the taper ?

Sincerely - Tony C.

Hi Tony
I took 400 mg for about 3 years. I had tried to taper once unsuccesfully - without using the prozac and ativan. But when I used the small doses of the above mentioned meds, it seemed to work for me. My doctor told me there shouldn't be any withdrawal, but I felt withdrawal - or at least what I thought was withdrawal (muscle aches, headaches, anxiety, insomnia, difficulty concetrating)- maybe it was the old anxiety creeping back, hard to tell. But the message is, I did taper successfully. Good luck in your journey. Let me know how it goes.

Hi Tony
I currently take 10 mg of prozac (and occasionally .5 mg klonopin in the evening for sleep) - it seems to help (I am really sensitive to medication). I know it sounds cliche, but I believe my anxiety (which was severe) has also been helped by intense exercise, yoga and remembering that I can get through this - especially the exercise has been a godsend to my mental well being.
I am more than happy to help -
