Nardil and asthma medications--Advice?

Posted by greywolf on May 26, 2004, at 21:56:47

I'm starting Nardil Friday, but I'm presently taking Serevent 2x/day and albuterol (inhaler) as needed. Can anyone give me advice with respect to whether I should be seriously concerned about an interaction with the Nardil?

My doc is apparently not concerned, but the literature for these drugs and most other asthma meds I've been on usually mention MAOIs as problematic. Are there other asthma meds that have a reduced risk of interaction with MAOIs?

Thanks.

My resource says about interactions between Nardil and Serevent and Nardil and inhaled albuterol: "caution advised. combo may increase risk of cardiovascular adverse effects (synergistic effects). Are you under the care of a good pdoc?

Personally I never had a problem with occasionally using ventolin (albuterol) while on Nardil or Parnate... however, you may want to ask you doc about singulair (montelukast)

Thanks gardenergirl and djmmm. I think the albuterol situation is going to be a problem. I use it quite often, and the pharmacist had a long talk with me about it today. He agrees that singulair is a viable alternative for the serevent, but he's going to have to do some research on emergency inhalers that might be safe.

On another note, I found it interesting that the pharmacist asked me to do him a favor and start taking fish oil capsules while I'm on the Nardil. He does not prescribe Nardil often (in fact, he told me that his very busy RiteAid store does not have anyone currently taking it besides me), and said he would rest easier if I supplemented the Nardil with the fish oil. While it's not conclusive, I guess fish oil gives a cardiovascular assist, and he figured that the omega-3 depression link couldn't hurt.

Never had a pharmacist take that much of an interest before.

Greywolf-

I wouldn't be worried at all. I was on a high dosage of Nardil while taking Albuterol, Advair and Singulair. They really don't pose problems from my own experience and from what many doctors and PharmD's told me.

Hope this helps
Jerry :-)

For what it's worth, I was able to get rid of my rescue inhaler soon after I started taking singulair

Thanks all for your thoughts. You've all put my mind at ease. I think I'll be trying the Singulair.
