effexor and sexual side effects

Posted by appleberry on May 26, 2004, at 8:43:56

hey.
i am pretty new to the boards, although i posted a question a couple of months ago. i just had a quick question i was hoping somebody might be able to help me out with. my doctor is clueless! i was on 150 mg of effexor and totally numb. i am female, by the way. my doctor decreased me to 75 mg. i have some 37.5 mg leftover. when i plan to have sex, would it make sense to take less effexor that day so i can have some normal sensations? i have been taking 75 mg for a couple days and it seems a little better, but still not great. would it make sense to take 37.5 mg on days i plan to have sexual contact? i have limited experience with guys, and would hate to totally shut down because i am not feeling anything. thanks for the help!

I was on effexor for about 3 months and during that time period I did notice a decreased libido and sensation as well. I was taking around 150 mg a day. I am not sure if taking a smaller dose on the day you plan to have sex will help or not because the effexor is already in your system and one day of decreasing the amount may not due much. If this is a big problem for you there are some options to consider:
1. Wellbutrin has been known to increase libido and sexual function.
2. Take as little Effexor as you need to maintain your quality of life and this will decrease the side effects.
Hope you find what works. The best course of action is to talk to your doctor and get his/her opinion. Hope all works out.
I got off the Effexor because if did nothing for my anxiety(actually made it worse) and the side effects were to much to deal with...weight gain, decrease libido, etc.

It has been my experience that unlike quick-acting
Benzo's...Effexor's "effects" cannot be tweaked so quickly at allow the rebound of libido so quickly.

I have a very fast metabolism...and yet I still need several days..or even a week or more, to notice a significant increase in my libido.

Before I began to take first Zoloft and now Effexor...my libido was beter than normal (according to my wife)

I still do better than the national average...but I notice a definite reduction in both quality and quanity while on Effexor.

I guess what I am saying is that in my experience
cutting back the day, or the day before will have little if any effect on your sex drive.

There are plenty of meds you can add to effexor to counter act the sexual side effects COMPLETLY such as wellbutrin, stimulants such as ritalin, and the anti anxiety med buspar. My theory is that if a med gets rid of the depression why change it unless the side effects are extreme and can't be counter acted by adding something else.

Scatterbrain,
Of course you are correct.
I was dealing with the original question of altering the AMOUNT of Effexor, and what quick effects that would have on libido.( See original question)

Sure you can add more Meds to counteract the effects of the effects of the side effects...etc...
But do we really want to play a Cat and Mouse Game like that with our Brain Chemicals?

My vote is no.
Just my opinion....

I was on 75mg of Effexor for only just over a month, now tapering off due to non-subsiding side effects and have been down to 37.5 mgs/day for 4 days and have not yet noticed an increase in libido...for me ANY effexor wipes out my libido...and I'm just not willing to take more drugs...call me stubborn but...

Good luck with it.
