Go, NOW, to your doctor or an intake center. Don't wait to be broke from spending, or for the drop to come. Go, NOW.

Has an antidepressant induced hypomania/mania before? When I don't have a mood stabilizer on board, an antidepressant sends me manic in two days. I agree with Sebastian...Zyprexa works wonders for my hypomania or mixed states. And for me it works fast.

Absolutely agreed. You may be BP3, as I am, which means you get manic or hypomanic episodes from ADs such as Remeron. Not only are you in bad shape now, my pdoc says every untreated manic episode increases the chances of more. I can use Seroquel or Risperdal to stop a manic episode, as prescribed for me, and Valium or Klonopin help a bit, but you are you and I am not a doctor.

Come to think of it, I must be a bit hypomanic myself - I've been up all night and all morning reading and posting here with no sense of time! Maybe I'd better take my own advice....

Hope you can get to a Dr. quickly -- let us know how you're doing.

Please try that beta blocker that was prescribed to you. It should help you calm down. I know you don't want to take it, but you are suffering too much now.

Hi Donna,

If you still have the Fluanxol tablets on hand, take one & go to the doctors. Is does appear that you are Bipolar which explains the bad time you have had with antidepressants.

Cheers,

You need to speak with a doctor ASAP. Valium is not going to do it for you. You need immediate mood stabilization with one of the atypical anti-psychotics (Zyprexa). Please, contact your doctor...you need proper medication.

You may want to get a second opinion from your Pdoc who says it's definately not Bipolar. I know from experience that when I'm hypomanic or manic, the most stimulating things for me are: having people around, talking on the telephone, and BUYING, BUYING, BUYING. Sounds like hypomania. All the best. -Stacey

Here in the uk we just have gp's dont have p docs... next up from the doc for mental health is a physiciatrist i seen her 2 yrs ago she diagnosed me with anxiety then i had to wait another yr to see her and she diagnosed me with anxiety again, and have signed me off over to a voluntry thing called mind.. i been fine today... so does this sound like bp then? i am not sure doctor AND the physciatrist told me o no you dont have bp..every single ssri i have been given have sent me manic and my hrt racing BIT TIME and snri's did the same like effexor buprion (wellburtin) fluenxol, reboxatine, all sent me manic, i mean my hrt was over 90 beats per minute all day yesterday i was taking it every hr or so, i didnt care though that was just the thing now today i am worrying, hence the panick... wats with the manic states worse round people and on the fone and shopping and the racing hrt beat the trembling of my bottom lip i felt as if i was on speed (amphetamine) was of the head i couldnt beleive it, and i didnt feel or look like myself either.. was as if i was looking at me or being someone else was strange, today i been calm the weirdest thing is though that i can slowely feel myself falling into a depression state, like today i woke up with palpitaions, i had to take my daughter to school then i went to town to post some parcels off then i had to pay my bills, then when i was queing i felt all weird and my hrt was jumping out of my chest anyways i got through it and i walked up the road to the supermarket to buy some stuff i needed then i came home, i could feel the middle of my chest burning, BUT i knew it was anxiety and i wernt gonna let it get to me today o no was i heck as like...

I aint stressed at all, AND i can feel myself slipping cus this past week i been on a high since i told my mum i cant go abroad with her, i just cant do it so instead she is taking just my daughter which would be a great break for me for the week, i can get on and do some stuff i feel great, this week i been on a high and i was panicky today and i know i will be a little panicky tommorrow even though i will try and fight it, just sit out in my garden in the sun and just relax.. and let it pass HOPEFULLY just those phyisical symptoms that gets me... I have had an ecg is it where they put these things on your head and it tells if there is anything wrong with the brain, and i also had an ekg is it where they put the monitor on your heart all came back normal, ahhhh ..anyways thankyou for listening any advice would be much appreciated.. and can someone plse tell me what i got? if you know?

p.s..... 30 remeron (over a yr now)
40mg inderal (never taken it to scared to)
2mg of valium i take about 6mg as needed (not that much help)

Thankyou

If you were prescribed inderal, you must need just as badly as the remeron. Why are you scared to take it? Did some one tell you something negative about the beta blocker? Beta blocker have been around way before Remeron. They are good meds when used properly. Half of my family wouldn't be here with out them.

My mother felt like she was losing her mind for years and having major paniac attacks. She thought she was even having a stroke. Her blood pressure was out of control from stressing out so much. She was mapping out ways to kill herself and then she took her beta blocker. Within 2 days, her view of her current situation totally changed. She no longer had the urges for suicide. While you may not have this drastic of a change, it really sounds like you need it. Beta blockers have been known to treat anxiety. They affect your parasympathic nervous system which will calm you down and make your heart beat more regular.

Please explain what fears are stopping you from taking a med that may really help you. I really want to hear you get some relief. You are just suffering with these symptoms too often. You may have a tool right in your hands to help you.

Hey Donna, sorry things are so bad for you right now..... couple of things
SEVERE ANXIETY!!!!!
NOT BI-POLAR (IMO)
I think that you are like a lot of people with severe anxiety, you catastrophosize (sp) I know it is hard not to !! The ordering things over the phone in my opinion might sound manic but in reality I think it is your best attempt to calm down your hyper agitated -thought processes and divert your attention away from your anxiety.
The mere fact that you are scared to take the beta-blocker is an anxious reaction to ...'what if'..... I take this and it makes me feel worse....I know! I have been there. Also while remeron is effective for a small minority of people It really is not that effective for panic and generalized anxiety (which sounds like you have)I know you have not had a good reaction to the ssri's and snri's but keep this in mind....Many if not most of the AD meds that are utililized for mood and anxiety disorders will, in and of them selves most likely cause some "extra anxiety" when you initially start them up but once your body and brain adapt, things usually mellow out. My suggestion would be to maybe try the following. Get to your psychiatrist as soon as possible (I know and am very sorry that mental health resources over there in the UK , are not the best)...then tell your doc you absolutely must get your anxiety under control. Perhaps trying an ssri, properly dosed (carefully up) along with a therapuetic amt of valium, and use the beta blocker for the physical symptoms of the anxiety until you can reach an effective dose of an ssri-it may take several weeks to do this but I beleive that it will be well worth your time. Also as your going on an ssri I would see no problem with taking the Remeron to help you sleep. I know that you are suffering emmensly but I just have a feeling that your physical symptoms of anxiety are preventing you from getting on an 'effective med for your anxiety. Ask your doc. which ssri would be the least 'activating' for you -in her best judgement and give it a go from there! Just my thoughts! Good Luck
Snapper

Hi Shadows,

Why do you recommend Inderal so furiously? Isn't Beta blockers induce depression? Years apart, I had a tachycardia problem and my doc prescribed Inderal 40 mg twice a day for me. It alone made me depressed and I had to resort on an antidepressant. Beta blockers in general and Inderal in particular are notorious for inducing depression. In susceptible individuals don't recommend it please. For a hypomanic patient, it is better to be on either new generation antipsychotics or klonopin like drugs.
PLS

Hi PLS,

I agree with shadows here. Donna is stuck with some very average doctors. She can't get benzos for daily use, worse still, the AP that they have prescibed to her is Fluanxol. Her best bet is a beta blocker which has been prescribed for her. Beta blockers may not help depression, but I think her current worst problem is something close to constant panic.

Cheers,
Panda.

No no to ssri's and no no to fluenxol i know for a fact it will raise my bp and hrt rate and i will freak over it and it will send me manic like the rest have.. i am gonna stick to my remeron 30mg a night and carry on taking my valium 2mg as needed sometimes obviousley i take upto 6mg in one go, i am sure my doctor will prescribe me more when i go back for my review which i will do in about 2 weeks, i suppose my manic eppisodes r just me being bubbly around people it could be because i am anxious... thankyou all for advice i much appreciate it, I am scared to take a beta blocka because i am afraid my heart will stop or i will have a panicky reaction to it like i did with trazadone, i am a little weary of it, BUT i have heared so many good things about it, its not the depressio nthat gets me its the anxious states i can come out of depression BUT not my panicky state... i have a constant heart rate of over 80 beats per min... when i am manic its anything between 90 and 120.... alot of people's heart beats upto 200 bpm so i shouldnt really worry.. BUT still i am scared to take a beat blocka... knowing me i will take it and get a panick attack that i cant breath or something.. or my heart rate will be n its 50's then i will be panicky... i will ofcourse have a chat with my doctor about taking it and get him to reasure me..

Thankyou guys yall my best freinds

Donna,

Oh god! You're not bipolar (in my opinion) although a mood stabilizer could help you. Antidepressants don't seem to work with you. It is perfectly possible.

Ask your pdoc for a good dose of clonazepam (Rivotril, Klonopin). Valium is almost useless in panic attacks.

Whish you all the best!

Hi Donna,

Fluanxol is an old style antipyschotic drug that is an Alpha-1 blocker like Trazodone & Prothiaden. Alpha-1 blockers cause your peripheral blood vessels to relax which causes your blood pressure to dive when you change from laying to sitting or from sitting to standing, this in turn causes your heart rate to raise(reflex tachycardia) but your blood pressure still stays low.

Beta blockers restrict blood to you muscles & periphery while lowering your heart rate & output, the net result is lower blood pressure, while at the same time an increase in blood getting to the brain which will relieve your panic. The derealization & out of body experience that severe panic suffers gets is cause by epinephrine being released by the brain causing an increase in heart rate & a diversion of blood away from your brain & to your arms & legs so you have maximum energy to run away from danger. Panic is your bodies natural reaction to danger gone haywire & beta blockers might be just as good as benzos for treating them.

Beta blockers are very safe drugs, people who have had heart attacks take them to prolong their life. My father-in-law takes them(Betaloc)to keep his heart in low gear ever since he had a major heart attack in 1988. He had another minor heart attack when he run out while away on a fishing trip, he has never let himself run out again.

If I were you I would try taking a half dose when everything is fine, I think you will find them to be OK. If it isn't, then you need to try a different one, but people don't really have any problems taking them.

Cheers,
Panda.

Hi Pluto,

I have been following the threads for awhile. She is unable to tolerate ssri, because they raise her blood pressure and she is unable to get other meds from her doctor. She is suffering quite frequently from paniac and anxiety symptoms. She is having chest pains too. She is really suffering, so why not just give the med a try. They do help anxiety symptoms.

As a cardiac registered nurse, I have seen hundreds of people on beta blockers and antidepressants and do just fine. Meds are a fine tuning process.

This person happens to already be on a antidepressant before administering the beta blocker. The dosage could be adjusted to help this lady without having a major depression issue. In your case, as you mentioned, you weren't on an antidepressant already.

In addition, there is a reason for a medical professional to put this lady on the medicine. I don't know whether she is informing the physician where she is not taking it or not. The doctor may be giving the valium in addition to the beta blocker in his mind. Furthermore, valium is also known to induce depression.

I am suggesting compliance. This helps physicians to see what is working and what is not working. So, as a medical professional, I would instruct a patient to be compliant and at least give their medication a fair trial especially seeing there is a lack of medication they can access and tolerate.

Hi crazychick,

I am glad to hear that you are going to talk to you doc about your feelings regarding the beta blocker.

I can relate to your fears about meds. I had a severe reaction to serzone, zoloft, wellbutrin. I was really scared to take another antidepressant, but I did and I am glad. I didn't have the reaction to Lexapro that I did to those meds. I also can't take many antinausea medications and anything related to them. But, you may know this already, trazodone and the beta blocker are not the same. They are totally different. You may or may not choose to use the beta blocker in the future. I am not familiar with the UK administration on medications. So, what other medications can you access for paniac and anxiety there?
