Metformin

Posted by Sad Panda on May 21, 2004, at 7:50:49

I visited an endocrinologist today, he gave me a script for 300mcg of Thyroxine/day & once he sees how I go on Thyroxine, he may give me some Metaformin. Has anyone had experience with it?

Cheers,
Panda.

What's the metformin for?

I hope the thyroxine works out for you. I like T4 better than T3.

Hi Scott,

My blood glucose levels are alway on the upper limit, but I pass glucose tolerance tests. The Endocrinoligist tells me Metformin is used to lower insulin tolerance, which should make my blood glucose levels drop to a more normal level & it may also stop carb cravings.

Cheers,
Panda.

Hi Panda.

> Metformin is used to lower insulin tolerance,

Is that the same thing as insulin resistance?

I was curious, and found this interesting citation on Medline that might be relevant to females:

Hi Scott,

That's some more good info. My wife has heard of it being used for POCS too, for awhile gynos where trying to diagnose her with POCS, but it turned out to be Endometrial Cysts.(Both POCS & Endometrial result in ovarian cysts.) I have so far learned that Metformin seems to be the most common drug used in Diabetes treatment & it's main side effects are GI upsets & diarrhoea(an incredible 52% according to rxlist.)

Cheers,
Panda.

Hi Panda,

My pdoc has prescribed 500 mg x 2 per day of metformin (glucophage) for me to counteract the effects of the zyprexa weight gain. Apparantly, zyprexa raises insulin levels and and increases appetite/carb cravings so it is supposed to help in that area. I have noticed some dizziness with it but I thought that was due my withdrawal from prozac.

Make sure to take it with food and drink lots of water while on it.

Don't know about Metformin, but 300 mcg of Synthroid is HIGH. I hope this isn't the first time you are taking it.

Hi Maxime,

I've been taking 300mcg first thing in the morning, it's seems to be mildly arousing, but hasn't affected my pulse. I thought 300mcg might be a lot too, I wanted my GP to give me 50 or 100 but he didn't want to & gave me a referral to an endocrinoligist.

Cheers,
Panda.

Yes, I take metformin, otherwise known as Glucophage. I take the XL version--i.e., one dose per day. I've had no problems with it.

Now when it comes to meds with dangerous potentiel SE's, metformin is one (lactic acidosis) and there are precautions needed when having surgery or injected dyes, etc., but you don't see quite the hysteria about it that we see with other meds, like Serzone.

Thanks for the link, Scott. It doesn't surprise me. I think my thyroid/insulin resistance treatment has helped. But I'm skeptical about the idea that (for me) I could give up the ADs and let the HPA axis meds deal with the depression on their own.

BTW, I was curious about the other med, beside metformin, that was mentioned in the abstract. This is from RxList.com:

"Brand Name: Syprine
Generic Name: trientine HCl
Drug Class: TREATMENT OF WILSON'S DISEASE"

"Trientine hydrochloride is a chelating compound for removal of excess copper from the body"

Hi Noa,

I'm not sure I want to add another drug to my growing collection, I am hoping the Thyroxine will affect my metabolism enough that I will not need it. Metformin looks like a really good drug, but it's main side effect is diarrhoea, 52% according to RXList, & since I've spent most of my life with diarrhoea, it's not something that I want back again.

Did you have any inital GI side effects?

Cheers,
Panda.
