Celexa vs. Lexapro - Any Verdict? Anyone? Chemist?

Posted by Simcha on May 23, 2004, at 3:40:31

I've seen a lot on this board about Lexapro and people switching to Lexapro. What I cannot seem to glean from the discussions is what really matters to me.

Can anyone tell me if switching from Celexa to Lexapro was worth it?

Currently I'm on 40mg of Celexa. My pdoc, the last time I saw him, said that he would consider changing me from Celexa to Lexapro sometime soon. He did not say anything definite.

The thing is that Celexa seems to work for me. I'm wondering if that allegedly ineffective R isomer might be doing something for me possibly and that by switching to Lexapro I might be missing something.

Chemist, do you know if the research really does say that the R isomer in Celexa does nothing but produce side effects?

Thanks for your responses in advance.

I'd say stay on Celexa. Initially Lexapro was marketed as Celexa with the side effects half removed, but it appears to be a different drug. Success on Celexa does not seem to automatically equate to success on Lexapro & failure with Celexa doesn't automatically mean failure on Lexapro.

Cheers,
Panda.

I switched and noticed less side effects of tiredness on Lexapro. But others like Celexa more. I would definitely not switch if I were you since Celexa is working.

If I were you I would say you dont want to switch. If Celexa is working for you your doc should not be switching you to Lexapro. There is no reason to do that.

Aint broke=dont fix.

Hi!
I was on Celexa 40mg for 2 years with good results. Then I felt so good that I decided to wean off the medication. I took -10mg every two weeks. I had no withdrawl symptoms, besides a little headache.
After some stressful events in my life, I started to experience severy anxiety. I asked my pdoc to put me back on Celexa. He insisted that we switched to Lexapro because, according to him, it is the same medication with none of the SE!
I can tell you that I had the same SE on both meds. I even experienced more severe anxiety, jitters and flu-like symptoms on Lexapro.

The first 2-3 weeks on both meds are hell, but after 3 months on Lexapro 10mg,I can tell you that I feel as good on Lexapro as I did on Celexa.

Thanks for all the responses. I just wanted confirmation that I was making a good choice in staying with Celexa.

Currently my pdoc is letting me get refills from my general practitioner. I go to my gp for regular asthma checkups. Therefore it's just cheaper and more convenient to get refills from him so long as my mood is stable. So far so good.

Again, thanks all!!!

Simcha
