do not always believe the hype -Lexapro

Posted by appadoo on May 22, 2004, at 6:25:31

I switched from Zoloft to Lexapro a little over 2months ago hopeing that my side affects namely sexual and general larthagy will be minimised at best.I heard all the great stories how Lexapro was the best SSRI to come on the market, owing to the fact of getting ride of the bad isomer from Celexa, all well and good in theory but for me Lexapro
mad me anxious, paranoid, more tired than before
and my sexual life became non existent as to speak.I went back to my pdc and he suggested we try prozac which is more stimulating than Zoloft.
If prozac doesn't work I am going back to Zoloft.
The lesson I learned from this is that be weary of new anti-depressants promising many things.
Generally the old SSRI are as good or even better
than the new formulas .

I agree with you.

I was on Lexapro for 4 months and it did nothing for me at all. I felt the same with or without it. I'm switching at my next doctor's visit- to anything but Lexapro. It was expensive but worthless to me.

Just my opinion/experience.

I am from the land down under and the the government subsidies most of the medications.
With me it wasn't so much the expense but rather the time wasted while I was on the med.My curiosity got the better of me.I asked to be put on prozac rather than zoloft to get an indication whether there is something similar or better than zoloft. If prozac doesn't work I am staying with zoloft until I am convinced of better treatment. Please note that lexapro became available in Australia about 4mths ago or there about.Eventhough,I presume you are from the states, your medication is expensive we do not get the large choices you have.
I also have ADHD and been taking the generic dexamphatamine (immediate release) I wish I had more options available to me like dexedrine SR,adderrall XR,wellbrutin and the like. For some reason the govt doesn't subsidies Ritalin and I was on that for a little while and paying aus60 vs aus17 for dex.So I can understand your situation about hesitating to change to find the right medication. From my experience Zoloft at 100mg was ideal.I also took aropax(paxil) before
zoloft it was a bit sedating however I had to stop it because when I took dex it made me feel
numb.It might have to do with drug-drug interaction.
One other thing I actually lost weight with zoloft and put on weight with lexapro.
Its not a problem for me because i exercise and fairly muscular. However I mention it because so many people worry about putting on weight when on SSRI.
I am finish now I go out and round up some kangaroo ha ha ha

ps I am faily new to this message board and I found chemists comments very insightful, keep up the good work.

Been on Lex 15mos., currently 30mg. It took me 9 weeks before I felt any benefits from Lex. Had increased anxiety and depression during my *adjustment* period, but after that Lex has been very good for me.

Best of luck!~~~8|8

Same here. Hitting 2 months on Lex, and I'll say without hesitation that it made a huge difference for me. The adjustment phase was terrible, but I got through it and now I feel like I used to feel back before all this mess started.

I do have slight sexual side effects, but I'm learning to deal with them and they are not nearly as bad for me as I have heard from other people (in that I can still do the things I want to do, it just takes longer).

I'm on 10mg daily, and the other meds I went through before getting here were many. Different people react differently to different things. I got lucky with Lexapro. I hope you find your mix, life is too short to feel miserable.

I have had success with Lexapro too..tough adjustment period but saw great results in a little over a month..at least as good as Celexa in my opinion..
