NEUROTIN

Posted by AntiTrust on May 19, 2004, at 13:49:54

does anyone know the highest dose a doctor can give out of Neurotin? I am highly concerned right now for my husband that suffers from neuropathy from diabetes. 3 yrs ago a pain specialist in MI put him on 300 mg for pain and sleeping help...........now fast forward to 2004

He is now taking 2400 mg a day (3-800mg pills)
and was told they will up it again!!!

now with my research and things I have heard on Tv lately that this drug is to prevent seizures!!!
nothing I have read says anything about sleep or for pain caused by neuropathy........

comments? suggestions? etc etc just answer this post ASAP please..........concerned madly about the doses here!

I think 3600mg is the maximum that most doctors will use. Neurontin is not dangerous in high dosages. It is quickly passed in the urine and does not undergo metabolism in the liver.

I've gone up to 4800 mgs (nm)

I have been put on Neurontin for pain management in the past. It is one of those off label uses for the med. Unfortunately it did nothing for me at all and I don't remember how high my dose was. Last year I worked with a woman who was on an incredibly high dose of neurontin but I can't remember why she was on it. She was being stabilized on seroquel, neurontin and an ad. (I am in the d & a field and she was recovering from a heroin habit and had severe anxiety plus a bunch of other (unnecessary psychiatric diagnoses).

Neurontin inhibits its own uptake beyond a certain amount (something like 600 mg in 3 hours, as I recall). In other words, no matter how much you take, once you reach the threshold, the rest is lost in the urine (as another poster pointed out). It isn't metabolized via the liver, and is viewed as very safe as well as nearly impossible to overdose on.

My big question is why take so much, if such a large proportion is wasted? I guess it could work with multiple doses per day.

Hi

There are /or were neurontin pills 800mg dosage.
This I don't understand if the body can only absorb 600mg..unless it can't absorb the whole 600mg in a 600mg pill...so needs the xtra 200mg.

my husbands NOW takes three 800 mg pills a day
morning afternoon and at night.......until he goes to his next appointment and they said they will increase it but I will have more knowledge about this drug and will QUESTION the good doctor on why..........THANKS GANG! I just don't get it either and can't see him taking more than his body is going to use and the rest just gets wasted in urination!!!

I don't understand it....I feel no effect at all from neurontin unless I take 1200 mgs at one time! Could the doseage issues, perhaps, have to do with body weight?

Good question-I do not know if the dose is based on body weight. I wouldn't think it would but does anyone have any thoughts on this??
