How long to keep meds before discarding them?

Posted by BRC on April 29, 2004, at 19:55:48

My prescription of the benzo klonopin gets filled automatically every month. I do not always take the dose prescribed by my pdoc. And as a result I have a stock pill of Klonopin pills. My question is does Klonopin lose its effectiveness if they are kept in my medicine cabinet for long periods of time? How long does klonopin last before it expires? Or does it ever expire or lose its effectiveness? Any comments or advice would be greatfully appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Keep in cool and dry - e.g. never store medicine in the bathroom medicine cabinet.

How about fridge or freezer? Would they crack up? Or is it good enough at room temp?

hi all, chemist here.....advice to keep ALL meds out of your bathroom is number one. avoid light, heat, and loisture. freezer/fridge is an alternative IF - and only IF - you have some meds that you might take a year from now. problem is, there is water (vapor) in the bottle. aside from evacuating with nitrogen and sealing with parafilm, expect some hydrolysis, i.e., degradation. best overall bet: use (in US) saran wrap (clingy sheer for wrapping food) around cap and bottle, store away from heat and light and children (high up in kitchen, away from stove/oven or in bedroom drawer) and you are good for a year - at *least*....all the best, chemist
