Clobazam (Frisium in Aus.) compared to clonazepam?

Posted by Daemon on April 22, 2004, at 7:31:39

Hi Folks,
I'm in the middle of assignments and was pretty tense along with painful across the back, neck and shoulders so I asked mum if I could take a frisium- yes from her prescription but I had been prescribibed them in the past for dental TMJ pain.

I have social anxiety and am currently on a tricyclic which bites- frisium is in the family of benzos right?

Well I took one tablet (10mg- says you can take up to 3 a day as needed)and I feel pretty relaxed at the moment (all pain tension gone).

Mum said maybe I could just take her's when I want (I'm planning on visiting a psych for a prescription of klonopin/clonazpam).

So how does clobazam compare to clonazepam?

I looked at the equivalency chart but my math sux.

It says that 20 clobazam is equal to 20 diazepan which is equal to ??

I can't figure it out! :O\

What do people think- should I try out this clobazam on an as needed basis or wait until I get
a clonazepam (klonopin) script?

Damian - feeling fairly relaxed in Aus.

Hi Damian,

The info I have is 10mg of Clobazam = 0.25mg of Clonazepam or 5mg of Diazapam. It's an unusually one for Australia, it isn't in the PBS. I doubt you will get Clonazepam as it is indicated for epileptics only. PBS choices are Alprazolam, Oxazepam or Diazepam.

Which TCA are you taking & what don't you like about it?

Cheers,
Panda.

Hi Panda,
thanks. Yeah I was prescribed frisium for TMJ and
my mum was prescribed it for pain- it actually was
covered for me by TAC once but not anymore(Transport Accident Commission in Australia that you can get compsenation from but getting blood from a stone might be easier!).

I'm on amitriptyline- Endep/Elavil (?).

I don't like:
weight gain,
sedation (I take it before bed but still feel slow the next day, hard to get out of bed etc),
dry mouth,
urinary retention
and other stuff I can't think of now.

Does nothing for SAD.

I have been given a reccommendation from the Victorian Association of Anxiety Disorders Association for a a psychiatrist who specialises
in anxiety. If I can't get it from them I may
be forced to shop around or go through drug trials
with the psych until they relent and let me try Clonazepam lol!

I am thinking of taking Clonazepam with Neurontin- both are anti-convulsant though so I'd have to have a pretty 'with it' psych who knows his stuff.

MAOIs are out of the question because of the restrictive diet.

Also I wonder about trying Prozac again (was on it years ago and loved it but went off it)- something for energy and confidence? Some people say they get apathy but wouldn't apathy be better than SAD lol?

Damian.

Hi Daemon, I'm also in Australia and have depression and social anxiety. I've just recently been prescribed diazepam 5mg twice daily in addition to Zoloft 200 mg per day. So far the diazepam has done absolutely nothing. My doctor said he could prescribe clonazepam, but only privately. I believe it costs about $22 a month for 0.5 mg twice a day, compared to the diazepam I'm taking at $11 a month. He's also looking to get a health department authorisation for dextroamphetamine to both augment the antidepressant, and increase my sociability. If I was you, I'd see your own psychiatrist ASAP for clonazepam.

Clomipramine would be worth a trial instead of Amitriptyline. It is more serotoninergic, has a similar amount of noradrenaline effect, is less anticholinergic, so less dry mouth & urinary retention & alot less sedating, so it would cause less weight gain.

I wouldn't eliminate MAOI's, the diet is a lot less restrictive these days & MAOI's have the least amount of side effects.

Cheers,
Panda.

I've been on the Amit. for over 5 years now, I know should taper off it but I'm dreading withdrawl effects.

Thanks ok I will definitely reconsider it.

Do you know which particular MAOI is most widely used and effective for social anxiety?

If the clonazepam is going to be very expensive
I will sacrfice the food and give an MAOI a go- so I can stop being a scaredy cat of people,
get a job, life etc etc :O)

Regards
Damian.

Is diazepam on the PBS? and relatively inexpensive?

I wonder what other benzos are similar in Aus.- in terms of price and availability that might work for SAD?

Were you prescribed the Zoloft for social anxiety?

>My doctor said he could prescribe clonazepam, but only privately. I believe it costs about $22 a month for 0.5 mg twice a day, compared to the diazepam I'm taking at $11 a month.

Woah so 3mg a day would be $$$$$$$$

> He's also looking to get a health department authorisation for dextroamphetamine to both augment the antidepressant, and increase my sociability.

I thought amphetamines would make you anxious?

And he needs authorization from the HD?

>If I was you, I'd see your own psychiatrist ASAP for clonazepam.

Thanks I'm ringing up tommorow to go on the waiting list or maybe see another psych at that clinic.

Let the drug trials begin! :O\

> Is diazepam on the PBS? and relatively inexpensive?

Diazepam is on the PBS. Clonazepam is only PBS-subsidised for epilepsy.

> Were you prescribed the Zoloft for social anxiety?

Almost entirely for depression.

> Woah so 3mg a day would be $$$$$$$$

I'm not so sure - my pharmacist said it's only about $12-$15.

> I thought amphetamines would make you anxious?

Recreational doses (100 or 200 mg) can cause extreme anxiety/jitteriness, but in psychiatry they generally prescribe less than 60 mg a day, which mostly has a calming, focussing, motivating effect. Also, dextroamphetamine is much less anxiety-provoking than methylphenidate or mixed amphetamine salts.

> And he needs authorization from the HD?

'Fraid so - state laws say that this is needed, except for ADHD and narcolepsy.

> Thanks I'm ringing up tommorow to go on the waiting list or maybe see another psych at that clinic.

Good for you.
