SLEEPING WAY TOO MUCH HELP!

Posted by jerimycoplo on April 19, 2004, at 3:20:13

I have ocd and generalized anxiety disorder. In the past I did fine with 7-8 hours of sleep per night. I have been treated with all the ssri's at one point or another and now take klonopin as well. Since about 2-3 years ago my sleep patterns are competely messed up. I want to do things with my life but it's hard to do much when you sleep 13-14 AN AVERAGE PER NIGHT. (i am not kiddin). I can't understand if this has anything to do with my mental ilness or meds. Even when I am off the ssri and meds for a couple of months (which i tried) i still sleep the same amount. I feel at such a disadvantage , since there are people out there that have 6-7 hours in a day than me. It seems like my brain just *LOVES* the sleep. I hate it...but i usually end up taking naps all days as well (after sleeping for 12-13 hours in a night). Any suggestions? I read somewhere that people with ocd sleep alot more then normla people and that people with add require alot less sleep then average...
in any case, i wanna stop sleeping so long.
regards
jc

btw. i don't think i'm depressed. at least not majorily. I can;t say i'm very happy with my life right now (so maybe a low level chronic type of depresssion?) but i don't know if that could cause 14 hours per night of snoozing.

Ask your doctor about Provigil (also called Modafinil and Alertec). It works very well for your problem.

I'd suggest the opposite to Bill & have a trial of Remeron or a sedating TCA like Doxepin. I was sleeping 12-14 hours a day due to depression, but after a month of Remeron at 15mg my sleep reduced down to 8 hours of good sleep & I no longer feel a need for daytime naps.

Cheers,
Panda.

hi there....if you are trying to get up and go, remeron might not be your best bet, given the very potent histaminergic effects, although sinequan will start you off good and sedated but ought to taper off....then again, these meds affect different people in different ways, so perhaps you will find relief with remeron....best, chemist

Hi Chemist,

I admit that it is a radical idea to take downers to solve an oversleep problem, but it did wonders for my problem. I had initial insomnia + hypersomnia. I've had initial insomnia all my life & developed hypersomnia when I got depression. Remeron sedated me extremely well for awhile. I'd watch TV for the 30 minutes it took to absorb the tablet & then I would go to bed & not even remember rolling over once. My bed use to look like animals had slept in it, now I sleep like a log & wake up refreshed & no longer feel like I need a afternoon nap. 15mg was perfect for 8 hours sleep, I'm on 30mg & it is making me sleep 9 hours unfortunately. I need 30mg to couteract nausea from Effexor otherwise I would still be on 15mg. I also developed tolerence to the stoned/sedating feeling from the Histamine blockade & don't feel forced to go to bed, but I still go to sleep as soon as my head hits the pillow & I wake feeling pretty good & happy.

Cheers,
Panda.

Thanks for the advice guys. It's true. It could be that depression IS the cause of sleeping too much and something like a more potent antidepressant might help me sleep less.
However, I used to take Remeron for like 3 weeks and I was sleeping 20+ hours a day (during vacation time). I look at it as a super sleeping pill. It made me so dizzy, I could not stand up and I could barely talk to people. I agree it helped with depression alot. But one thing I learned is that all these drugs affect people differently.
I see Provigil as a possible option.

thanks
jc

Hi JC,

What doseages were you taking? My thoughts on Remeron are that it is a feeble AD, but a great sleeping tablet & that doseages for sleep should be kept in the 7.5 to 15mg range to avoid any hangover effect, although YMMV.

Cheers,
Panda.

I was taking 35 mg and then my pdoc said 'go higher' and you'll get less sedation, but the opposite hapened. At 70 mg, I was so dizzy I could not stand up and I slept for 72 hours straight.

The higher dose thing doesn't work for everyone & it doesn't work for me either. I think the most that should be taken for sleep is 15mg.

Panda.

I wasn 't that depressed, but after taking Remeron before bedtime at 30mg, I felt so miserable the next day I can't imagine it's called an antidepressant.

I'd combine Ambien with an SSRI, and maybe some Abilify to boot, anyday. These don't make me feel groggy the next day at all.

How long did you take it for? 30mg is too much for just sleep purposes, but good for SSRI & Effexor side effects. Remeron improves sleep quality with 5-HT2A antagonism, drugs like Ambien & Benzos cause it to deteriorate.

Panda.

I took remeron with provigil (100 mgs) I started 30 mgs of remeron and it took me several weeks to adjust. I was sleeping way too much. I stuck with it becuz at the time I felt it was my last option. SSRIs never worked well for me. My insomnia got so bad that remeron was a welcome relief. After 2 years, I did gain enough weight that I recently stopped using it. Provigil totally took away my appetite-until about 9 pm when I took remeron and ate chocolate every single night for months. This was like an addiction! (Years ago, I used to throw out leftover candy from Xmas, Halloween, Easter, etc.) This craving ceased when I stopped the remeron. Remeron didn't help my mood much. But it works great for some people. I think you must take 30-45-or 60 mgs to get the benefits of mood. At least that is what I have read here in the past.
