Super Sensitive To Medication Help!

Posted by griswald on April 22, 2004, at 20:05:06

I have been diagnosed as bipolar but I mostly have problems with depression. I am extremely sensitive to every mood stabilizing or antidepressant medication I have tried, especially antidepressants. 1/20 of a Paxil will keep me awake for two days. Lithium made me feel like a zombie and really did nothing for my depression. Lamictal was helping with the depresssion at 30mg/day, but I couldn't sleep and it was making me extremely irritable. Now I'm off the lamictal but depressed. I tried buspar but a crum of the pill kept me up all night. I have also had a lifelong problem with insomnia and take medication for that at night. Is anyone else this sensitive to antidepressant type medication? I don't know what to do!

Well, I wish I had sonething constructive, but at least know yo're not alone. In the last year, I've had failed trials with about a dozen drugs. I am quite hypersensetive to AD's especially.

Best of luck

I too am very sensitive to medications. Any anti-depressant drug makes me hop for a long time and I cannot sleep when I take any of them (I also have serious insomnia problems). In my case, I found it best to cope with the depression by seeing a psychologist and avoid the medications.

I CAN EMPATHIZE!

Hey,
I've been through 30 different meds and could tolerate only 1: Prozac... and the tolerability for that med was lackluster at best... But, I went through a session of 10 ECTs, and even though the ECT in itself had no positive effect, I find that I am better able to tolerate meds post-ECT! But just remember, there are so many different classes, such as atypical anti-psychotics and MAOI's, so maintain the faith!

Thank you. I'll try going back into therapy, too.

Hi,

TCA's would be worth a trial, you ceratinly have a lot of meds that you can still try. Do you have any kind of manic episodes? If so, then you should try Depakote. Generally BP'ers take Litium, Lamictal or Depakote to prevent manic episodes.

Cheers,
Panda.

I am BPII and have tried everything from AD's to mood stabilizers to Lithium, which made me sick as a dog. I am finally on Abilify, with a smidge of Klonipin and some Concerta and I feel better than I have in years. I also have an excellent therapist, which is a must to help keep it in perspective.

After horrendous paxil withdrawal, I couldn't tolerate any of the ssri's start up effects anymore except for prozac which, unfortunately, made me suicidal.

I have now been on 15mg of remeron for two weeks. It is the easiest drug I have EVER gone on. I was overly sedated for about 2-3 days and then I was fine (except for dry mouth and increased appetite).

I was totally med phobic when I tried this and have been pleasantly suprised.

I am so med sensitive (I was even before the paxil) that I can't even take most over the counter stuff without getting totally wacked out or sick.

Hope this helps.
