why do I feel so great after lighning storm?

Posted by linkadge on April 18, 2004, at 8:40:22

I feel very agitated, anxious and depressed right before it is about to rain. After the storm, I feel wonderful. It is like this wonderful sence of community. Is this just my imagination or have others noticed similar things ??

There is a lot of pressure in the air before a storm. For some reason, it affects some of us by increasing our anxiety levels, blood pressure, even heart rate. It builds as the air pressure builds.

Once the storm hits, the air pressure begins to dissipate and our levels begin to return to normal (or at least what is normal for us). And that is SUCH a relief after having spent hours or DAYS with increasing pressure.

I don't know why this happens. I don't even know if scientists would call us a bunch of freaks and that it couldn't possibly happen. It really doesn't matter what they think, huh?

Gosh, and it's so hard to sit in a classroom when this is happening. I remember my body moving with each beat of my heart. You're almost ready to have a panic attack, and you just NEED that release so badly. But when the storm breaks, isn't it paradise? And with a sigh of relief, we plod on through our days.

Hugs,
Sandy

I had to chime in when I saw this question. There is a sound scientific reason for it. The electric charge in the air changes before a storm with a predominance of positive ions near the ground. In those who are more sensitive, atmosphere that's positively charged tends to make one agitated, irritable, headache-y & other unpleasant feelings.

After the storm passes, the air near the ground has a higher amount of negative ions which tend to make people feel good. The same effect is seen beside waterfalls, crashing surf, refreshing wind just after a rain - all situations that generate a negative charge in the air from friction.

Both positive & negative ions affect us by our bodies releasing certain histamines, hormones & neurotransmitters in response, depending on whether they're negative or positive charges.

I could be locked in a dark closet with ear plugs on & could always tell when a storm was coming & when it had passed. Some are very sensitive to the effects of our atmosphere. I absolutely LOVE windy, unsettled days as I feel SO alive. You're not abnormal in the least.

THat is so AMAZING !!

You cannot believe the difference it is for me. One time I was near suicidal before the worst storm I can imagine. AFterwards, it was the most pleasant feeling, like everything was going to be ok, nomatter what.

Aren't there negative Ion generators out there, Are they explensive, do they do anything ??

I tried a negative ion generator about 15 years ago. Found I had to out my face directly in front of it to feel any effect. I would think they have progressed since then.

I try to use aromatherapy to moderate my mood rather than rely on weather patterns.

Sandy is right. It's likely the negative ion thing. That's also why people usually feel better when they're at the ocean-waves and lapping water greates a high negative ion state. I think wind on the other hand does the opposite. There are more murders in LA when the Santa Anas are blowing that there are at other times proportionately.

Santa Ana winds are different. There are a number of these winds, called foehn in diff parts of the world - Chinook coming off the Rockies, Sirroco around the Mediterranean...
http://webby.umeedu.maine.edu/coehd/wind/foehn.html
They generate positive ions.

Other winds can generate negative ions & they're the ones that feel so great. Sea breezes are an example of negatively charged winds.

Negative ion generators have improved but they still make positive ions too & a certain amount of ozone. Ozone has that sharp, acrid smell one associates with electric appliances. They have all the scientific logic of wearing magnets in your shoes. In other words, bunk.

Ions are short lived & dissipate rapidly & for an effect, a lot would need to be generated. There's no way a small machine can generate enough, without harmful ozone, to fill a room & effct a person for the good. Save your money & take frequent trips to waterfalls or the beach.

I am & that's most of the reason I'm not here. Plus there's too much conflict & anger that comes through on this board. I felt I really wanted to answer this about storms but won't show up here much, if at all, specially in summer. Everything is abloom & so gorgeous here. And people think Canada is cold & snowbound. We had snow twice this winter & it disappeared in a day. Some flowers never stopped blooming all winter!

WOW I was JUST thinking about this the other day because we had a huge thunderstorm. I've ALWAYS felt better after a storm - I can smell it in the air and can feel a definite change. I've never felt any negative emotioanla effects BEFORE a storm however. Now that I think about it - I've always loved overcast days - I don't know why tho. Interesting I found this thread when I did. I also think I have reverse SAD - I get more depressed in the summer as opposed to the Winter....interesting.....
