I've definitely beaten very severe social phobia (avoidant personality disorder) which was accompanied by agoraphobia, panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive personality disorder, major depression, and ADD. I've tried everything out there (yes, including MAOIs and narcotics). What finally worked for me was a combination of high-dose clonazepam (8mg/day) and Adderall XR 60mg/day. I recently added Prozac 40mg onto my regimen and have achieved complete remission! The clonazepam and Adderall were definitely the main players in bringing me back to "normal", though -- the benzo rid me of my anxiety, and the Adderall makes me want to socialize. It's great!
By the way, I've been taking the clonazepam for over three years and the Adderall for over six months (and before that I was treated with dextroamphetamine for several months). I take dextromethorphan to prevent amphetamine tolerance, and my Adderall works just as great now as it did the first day I took it. Same goes for the clonazepam.

I've only been on it a month and a half, but Nardil appears to me to be the gold standard for social phobia. This is the 10th med I've tried and is proving extremely effective at combatting my social phobia, which has been lifelong and quite debilitating.

Ok , it seems all of you have found relief from your Social Phobia so I have the next question
Can you describe me , how bad was you SP??
why do you think It is a severe Social P?
do you have 100% relief of it?
thank you very very much

> thank you very very muchMy social phobia was to the point where I used to skip school and family functions, pretend I was ill in order not to go to parties, have full out panic attacks occasionally, etc. Only in very structured atmospheres where small talk didn't go on was I borderline comfortable. Even when my grandmother would call, I would dread the fact that the phone would eventually be passed to me. I used to think everyone was talking about me and analyzing every little thing I did, even such things like how I was using my fork at dinner.
I'd say my relief from SP is about a constant 80% right now. The best its ever been is when I was taking Nardil with small doses of Klonopin, where the relief was about 90%.

> thank you very very muchMine is pretty bad. I'm 39 and have never even had a relationship. I have a big problem talking to people, even to people I know, and feeling self conscious and overscrutinized. If I say something that me makes me feel even slightly self conscious, I have a tendency to blush and start feeling uncomfortable, which often escalates to the point where I start sweating profusely. The sweating phenomenon will also happen to me in stores standing in line. That particular problem has been so bad in the past that I've wandered around stores for long periods of time waiting for a shorter line to appear at one of the checkouts. I've also had the same thing happen to me eating in restaurants.
As far as helping me to deal with my social phobia, I would rate
Zoloft (50-100 mg/day) Effexor (75-150 mg/day): 50% reductiontricyclics (nortriptyline, desipramine, protriptyline): 80% reduction
Nardil: 90% reduction

> Can you describe me , how bad was you SP??
> why do you think It is a severe Social P?I can answer this pretty quickly. I have social phobia, avoidant personality disorder, and agoraphobia, amongst other things. For two years from the ages of 17-19 I never left my house. Doctors' appointments were conducted via phone or webcam, and when the webcam was used, I dimmed the lights so the doctor couldn't even see my face. It started when I was about 13... my childhood ADHD was rapidly losing the hyperactivity component and at the same time I had begun to become "shy" for the first time ever. It got worse and worse until the climax five years later.
> do you have 100% relief of it?
No -- 1,000% relief, if not more. I went from being the shut-in and complete unknown to anyone outside my household guy to the outgoing, life of the party, lead singer and guitarist in a popular local band guy. :-)
I liked King Vultan's idea about estimating efficacy of meds that have worked, so I'll expand on that here with my own experience. I'm going to rate the improvement in three areas though:
Paxil -- Anxiety: 30% improved, Sociability: 100% worsened, Side Effects: BRUTAL
Luvox -- Anxiety: no improvement, Sociability: 40% worsened, Side Effects: BRUTAL
Celexa -- Anxiety: 20% improvement, Sociability: 50% worsened, Side Effects: BAD
Lexapro -- Anxiety: 20% improvement, Sociability: no improvement, Side Effects: MODERATELY BAD
Zoloft -- Anxiety: no improvement, Sociability: no improvement, Side Effects: BRUTAL

Effexor -- Anxiety: no improvement, Sociability: no improvement, Side Effects: NONE
Remeron -- Anxiety: no improvement, Sociability: no improvement, Side Effects: BAD

Amitriptyline -- Anxiety: no improvement, Sociability: no improvement, Side Effects: NONE
Clomipramine -- Anxiety: no improvement, Sociability: 30% worsened, Side Effects: BRUTAL

How do stimulants help social anxiety?
I thought stimulants make anxiety worse.

I'm in San Francisco and I've been to at least half a dozen psychiatrists over the past decade (due to frequent changes in my health plan) and all have adamantly refused to prescribe either benzos or stimulants for my social phobia. I have absolutely no personal or family history of drug or alcohol abuse and in this regard would make a good candidate for either med. Yet no doctor I've been to will prescribe them whether alone or in combination, claiming it's too risky. Living unhappily, being lonely much of the time, struggling financially and facing the likelihood of an improverished old age - to me that's a much bigger risk. Yet not one of them will bend. Sometimes I get so angry at their arrogance and lack of compassion.
What's so ironic is that San Francisco is famous as a city of experimentation, not to mention a cauldron of drug use. I could easily get either benzos or speed on the street any day I wanted to. The fact I don't should be an even bigger sign to doctors that I'm not likely to become an abuser, otherwise I would have become one long ago.

Hi Everyone,
I've been on about every med. one cares to name for SAD, GAD and Atypical Depression. The only thing I have ever found to work is a combination of 90mg. Nardil T.I.D., Valium 5mg. T.I.D., and Neurontin 100 mg. a day. That was the old Nardil though. Once taking the new and unimproved reformulated Pfizer version it stopped working as if I were taking placebo. Has anyone had this happen to them? Thanks for some of the ideas I need to research such as Adderall. I sincerely hope no one is having the same problems with the new Nardil that I am?
Sincerely,
Brian

I've seen your rates on many meds/supps depending on : decreasing anxiety / increasing sociability.
You didn't include few stuff that I remember you used and am very interested how would you compare those. Mainly:
1.Mirapex (pramipexole)
2.Laudinum (morphine or is it codeine?)
3.Enada NADH
4.L-Theanine
5.Ultram
6.anything else I forgot? :)I appreciate your input, as always ;-)
Take care

Hi There,
Yes I did beat it starting in 93 by taking 90mg. Nardil and 15mg Valium. In 2000 I added 100mg of Neurontin as well. Yes it did defeat my severe SAD or I have been told I may have Avoident Personality Disorder with is the worst type of Social Phobia. My life was litterally changed overnight once the full effect kicked in after about a month. I started dating, something completely impossible before, eventually got married and had a daughter, made friends at work and traveled on a consistant basis without a hint of SAD or GAD, plus I have Atypical Depression. Now my life is not so good because a company named Pfizer decided to take my life away and I'm very unhappy to say the least. All I can say is that when Pfizer took over Parke Davis and Warner Lambert to become the largest pharmaceutical company in the world (what happened to our anti-trust laws) ask Budweiser Bush Skywalker, they changed the formula to increase shelf life without ever doing any testing to see if Nardil still would work as well. So at this time we seem to be out of luck and I've yet to come up with any answers with the new Nardil not working.
Sincerely,
Brian
