has Wellbutrin helped your depression?

Posted by artofhands on March 9, 2004, at 23:01:53

I've had terrible headaches since a starting effexor a week ago. I'm thinking of asking my doc if I could try wellbutrin for my depression because I can't stand these headaches. How has wellbutrin worked for YOUR depression?

Hi,

Have you tried normal SSRI's like Lexapro, Celexa or Zoloft? These are usually tried first for mild to moderate forms of depression. Effexor is a stronger med that works better for moderate to severe forms of depression. It is generally not used first because it has bad withdrawl symptoms. Wellbutrin is a very mild AD for mild depression & is usually added to SSRI's to boost energy & relieve SSRI induced apathy & sexual disfunction problems.

Cheers,
Panda.

I think my doc gave me Effexor because I was having suicidal thoughts and anxiety. (I waited a little long to ask for help.) So you're saying welbutrin is very mild? It has really helped my sister which is why I was thinking of asking for it.

I'm on 200 mg of Wellbutrin SR and my pdoc augments it with 75 mg of Zoloft. The combo of the two seems to be working well for me.
God Bless ;-)

I don't normally think of Wellbutrin as an AD, but more as an ADHD med. I have taken it alone in the past for ADHD, but it made me extremely jittery and irritable. Recently I've used a very small amount to reverse some of the sexual side effects of Effexor and it worked very well, no pun intended...

My *opinion* is that there are better meds available for depression than Wellbutrin. Effexor is EXCELLENT. The headaches and other side effects moderate and go away with time. One week is not enough time for your body to get used to the med. Your brain needs more time to adjust to the different chemical balance.

Good luck!

Tony

i'm on wellbutrin 450mg, but more for add symptoms than for depression. for depression, i'm on 50mg of zoloft. i think it's the zoloft that finally stopped my suicidal ideation and severe depression. i'd been in the hospital twice in the past year before starting it, and i'd tried almost all the other ADs, including effexor. for me, anyway, effexor was pretty worthless, and withdrawal was awful. i think wellbutrin on its own would still work better than effexor, but everyone is different.

I find Wellbutrin helps most with anhedonia and lack of energy, rather than primary depression. However, I also get a lot of anxiety/agitation with it - I can only handle 75-100 mg a day without a fair whack of benzo's to compensate. At 300 mg/day, plus some GABA-type tranquilizers, I felt great but (my family assure me) was on the edge of classic mania.

I am probably type 2/3 bipolar/cyclothymic, and have been taking Lamictal for about 3 months. I want to stabilize the Lamictal (currently 250 mg.day) and decrease or eliminate some of the other meds I have been taking, then see how I do; but I am curious whether Wellbutrin with Lamictal would be less agitating/hypomanic-inducing.
