Stressing...Adivan vs. Xanax

Posted by mel_light on March 4, 2004, at 20:33:10

I'm having an attack and I know it but I can't do anything but keep stressing on it right now. I've been on Lexapro for about 2 weeks and today I have a pain in the middle of my chest and my mind is racing. I just took an adivan but I've read a lot of people have results with xanax. Does anybody have any advice on the difference between the two. I'm so flipping out right now and I just want this to go away...Help

Has anybody had excessive dry mouth with taking these meds? I have dry mouth so bad and it causes more of an anxiety because I feel like I can't swallow and breath. I feel like there's something else wrong, but I know that's the anxiety talking.

Mel, not to worry that happened to me also with Xanax, its just a side effect, remember your anxiety state like most of us on these boards is riding high dont let every little symptom rattle you, remember most importantly all symptoms even though scary at times are harmless and can only last so long, learn to go with the feeling and you will start to relax more please believe me, ive been dealing with high anxiety and its symptoms for 18 years...

God Bless

Mark

Thank you so much for your support. It is the next morning and I'm feeling beat, totally exhausted. I tossed and turned most of the night and would be waken up with the feeling of gasping for air but I can recognize today that it was a horrible anxiety attack. Several times last night I thought of calling 911 but luckily I talked myself out of them. My worst thing with all of this is I hate for my children to see me this way. Anyway, day 17 of Lexapro today, I'm staying home from work today. Hopefully it's a better day.

Those anxiety attacks are awful, aren't they? I did the whole ER route, too - several times.
For me, books like Triumph Over Fear by Jerilyn Ross and the Anxiety and Phobia Workbook by Edmund Bourne are helpful (find both on Amazon). Also, therapy does work, but it takes time to ease the symptoms. Ever thought of hypnotherapy? Hypnosis CD's, along with going to a good hypnotherapist, can be really helpful to calm down. I listen to those CD's on my headphones when I get too stressed out. Maybe you can start out your day with one.
Be careful about the meds... The withdrawal from Ativan really rocked me. All benzos have the ability to relax you in the short term, but you have to dig deeper to stop your attacks long term.
In the process of it all, I found out that my anxiety is from midlife and family issues that I need to come to terms with - they're not just random anxiety attacks.
Get a good and complete physical. Rule out any physiological issues that can be causing your stress (sleep apnea, thyroid issues, endocrine/hormone imbalance...). If everything checks out, just know that, as Ross says in her book, she's never had a patient physically collapse due to anxiety. So, you are safer than you think.
Good luck to you.
