seizures and bipolar disorder

Posted by Lilynoobab on March 4, 2004, at 3:38:26

Hi, I'd like to know if a person who has been tested for epilepsy and the results were negative, if they still have seizures which are now controlled by medication being Lamictan, can this person possibly be bi-polar if they also suffer from extreme irritability, as well as headaches, outbursts which they deny were insulting or anything of that nature, moody, very up and down, sometimes has little control over problems, and sometimes takes control so well of problems, also stresses dramatically and loses it with me or other people or even with himself? I really need to know if these are symptoms of Bi-polar, and if not, what would you diagnose this as?

I don't have seizures but I am bipolar and it sounds to me that is a good guess that it is bipolar disorder. It is a hard thing to cope with I know and so does my family.

i've suffered from tonic-clonic seizures and am also dxed bp 1- and my EEG was negative. have you been monitored for 24 hours (in the hospital)? my neurologist suggested this but i don't do well in hospitals and refused. fortunately the medication for bp and epilepsy are the same (AEDs)- lamictal is often used in both disorders. i truly think there is a connection between bp, panic and epilepsy disorders- and my shrink agrees. the key for bp is discreet affective episodes with hypomania or mania present. what does your pdoc think?
take care, judy

i wouldn't begin to guess at this, i would encourage this person to see a pdoc about this even if it's not it sounds like it's effecting his life in a not so great way. It could be bipolar but it could also be cyclothymia, or BPD. there seems to be a lot of cross-over in this area.
FWIW

Your mood symptoms sure seem like bipolar, but the seizures confuse me. You really should seek a second opinion about the seizures. Seizures can be caused by a variety of things. Jenn
