anxiety or depression medication?

Posted by chess on February 14, 2004, at 9:18:14

I haven't had a full-blown panic attack in a year, but I still have persistent general anxiety and fatigue and feeling of physical weakness (like I’m drained and have the flu) and my teeth-gums feel weak. I know that sounds like depression, but what confuses me is that I feel worse (not to point of full-blown panic attack, but to a feeling of high anxiety and being “activated”) when I am nervous or stressed or scared. So is that anxiety or depression? I'm trying to figure it out so as to take the right medication.

If I were you I'd take an AD cover all your bases.
have you tried a SSRI? anxiety and depression go hand in hand in my case.

Try Klonopin it is great for anxiety. I haven't had any problems with it, despite what some people have to say about it.

The answer you and I await is ocinaplon, a non-addictive anxiolytic owned by Dov Pharmaceuticals. The drug was prepared for Phase III trials but was held up by the FDA for safety reasons. So, most likely the FDA is holding up the "magic bullet" medicine, a non-addictive, non-amnestic anxiolytic. Don't they realize that millions of folks, like you and me, will benefit from this? I imagine they do, but since once of the trial participants had liver issues, which were possibly drug related (officially), they've held up the trial for 4 months.

This seems remeniscent of the way nomifensine was taken off the market.

Hi Chess,

I can understand why you're confused. In the case of anxiety and depression, one can often cause the other. (i.e. anxiety can bring on depression and depression can bring on anxiety)

Of course, you should discuss this with your pdoc (psychiatrist) but I would suggest that you take something that is both an anti depressant and an anti anxiety medication. Lexapro and Paxil are examples of meds that can take care of both.

I'm currently on 15 mg of lexapro for anxiety/depression and it has been wonderful for both.

K.
