bladder problems and lexapro

Posted by clight on February 15, 2004, at 12:42:14

Has anyone had bladder problems with lexapro? I have had increased frequency and urgency since starting the med. I have had all of the tests and everything comes out "normal".....but the symptoms persist. Anyone??

Noa, thanks for the link to the discussion on bladder problems. It is validating to know that I am not the only one, however, I would not wish this symptom on anyone!! I hope you are better and your bladder issues did not develop into anything severe.
Thanks!

So did you go off the lex due to bladder problems or did the problems start after you went off the lex? All I have found out is that it is not unheard of for SSRIs to cause this problem. I have found out everything myself on the internet, etc.... my doc says that there is no way that the lex could cause these problems but I would beg to differ!! My problem has been a bit better the past week. I have no idea why but I won't argue. My doc says I may have interstitial cystitis which is a chronic imflammation and irritation of the bladder due to unknown circumstances........it sounds rather grim. I still think that it is the lex though because I never had these problems before staring it. Let me know what you think!

I've had the same troubles. My pdoc said that it was highly unlikely caused by the med but everything stopped when I stopped taking lexapro. This is unfortunate because it was really working for me in other areas but I couldn't handle getting up 3-4x a night to run to the bathroom.

Interstitial cystitis was also mentioned to me (it can be caused by stress) but once again I felt fine as soon as I stopped taking lex.

so have you found a med that doesn't irritate your bladder? The lex has helped so much I am not ready to give it up!! But if I could find an alternative..........

I've been on Effexor and Prozac in the past and I don't remember bladder troubles but they didn't help the depression. Currently I'm on Wellbutrin and Zoloft and I'm not having trouble but they don't work as well on my mental state as lexapro. If you can handle the SEs of lexapro, you may want to stick with it.
