Have you tried Lamictal(lamitrogine-unsure of spelling) ?
They are using it now in UK.
It was good for depression and mood balance.
I was allergic to it.

Good luck

They wont give me lithium as they dont really prescribe it to residents of the uk..... and i am more down than up so he reckons i dont need it, if i were so mani and couldnt calm down then he would i guess or just give me valuim, its easier to calm down then to get up...? if you get me.. i will ask for Lamictal are there any experiences with this drug from anyone? aslong as it aint an ssri i might give it a shot... its my moods that scare me and my depressed days, so bad..
Thanx guys

....i dont think this would be the drug for me, i just looked back on threads and dont like the side affects from it... i have dry itchy skin as it is, and i wouldnt beable to tell the difference from the lamictal rash to my normal rash, thats if i were gonna be allergic to it.. so i better leave that out..

any more suggestions..?
Thanx

You've probably answered this before, but how did you go on Tricyclics?

Which Tricyclics did you try? SSRI's are similar drugs to each other as a group but Tricyclics aren't like that, each one is different, a lot are sedating like Remeron, some are stimulating & some strongly increase Serotonin like SSRI's.

I was started on Lamictal a few months ago. We increased the dose slowly. While it did cause some anxiety with each dose increase, it eventually went away. I am at 150mg, my target dose. It seems to be very effective in contolling my intense mood swings and I feel somewhat level.

I started on Lamictal fairly recently (so am not very experienced), but I find it a very positive med with almost no side effects. The pattern seems to be slight activation with each dosage increase; this has gone away very quickly for me, and the main effects seem to be mood improvement and increased clarity of thinking.

The gradual increase that's required is tedious, but I found Lamictal helpful from the start. I'd suggest you try it (cautiously) and see what you think. It's definitely quite different from other antidepressants etc. and might help where others don't. I especially like the lack of side effects.

Oops, stupid me didn't read properly. :)

Trazadone isn't a tricyclic it's in a class with Nefazodone(Serzone).

Prothiaden is the tricyclic called Dothiepin. It's one of the worst tricyclics to be on as it has been shown to be twice as pro-convulsant as any of the other tricyclics while not being as good as some of them.

If you are truely BP2, then you need to start a mood stabilizer. Lamictal would be a good start, what else do they let you have in merry old England? :)

Cheers,
Panda.

Two years ago Lamictal worked great for me for about six months and then pooped out.....I did have some bad side effects but I DO get every one going so YMMV.
I got flu like symptoms, headaches, and VERY bad cramps at TOM for the females among us.....
but no rash...
Lam is definately worth a try...but you really do have to go slow.
I am on Topamax right now and am adding Lamictal again for the downs that the Topamax isn't getting....it was so great I am hoping it works again.
goodluck

Don't prescribe lithium??

Am I not understanding properly :) ??

Perhaps on of the most effective and broad specrum drugs. Is this just your particular doctor telling you this, or has the country got some vendeta against it ??

I think a little lithium is good for everybody.

Best for BPII with mostly depression.
I have had much success on this med. Start out low, titrate slowly, don't drink any alcohol on it.

What mood stabilizers do you have in the UK?

Here in Australia you can have what you like provided it's Lithium! :)

I hope I don't turn out to be BP2, still waiting to see a pdoc....

Panda.
