Help! Mania....

Posted by EtktRide on February 2, 2004, at 19:13:55

In the past month I suddenly started having nights where I simply could not sleep and organized and cleaned everything in the house. I had been on Zoloft 150mg for about a year and Klonopin for anxiety at night then this suddenly started.

The doctor gave me 300 mg of Neurontin at night and then I had another 48 hour episode and I was so anxious that I felt like I was coming apart at the seams. So she bumped me to 300 mg three times a day. I still feel amped at nighttime and Yoga, meditation and relaxation exercies are not working. I cannot fall asleep unless I take 1.5 mg of Klonopin and then I am really drugged.

Anyone have anything like this?

My first thought would be that you are experiencing med-induced bipolar symptoms (not sleeping, cleaning)so adding a mood stabilizer was a good idea. It would appear it is either not working for you or you need to taper down on the Zoloft or quit it entirely and add another mood stabilizer such as Lamictal or an AD such as Wellbutrin which supposedly shouldn't make you cycle. There are many cases and many theories that ADs can add to bipolar symptoms although many psychiatrists seem to be completely oblivious to this theory, mine included.

Bring it up with your pdoc and see what happens and I hope you begin to find some answers. Sorry you are suffering.

Hi:
Sounds like you've been experiencing 'Manic,' ... not severe form like spending-spree, ... but 'hypo-manic' not to able to fall asleep. This is completely due to 'hyper' like running a whole street before going to the bed. For this problem, you need 'mood-stabilizer,' such as Lithium, Depakote and more to list for. Just anti-dep. and other med. you've been on is just aggrevating your 'non-sleep' along with other Bp symptoms you may have.
Try to call your pdoc. to get more appropriate dx along with right med. to get well.

Hi:
Neurontin is originally made for 'epilepsy,' however like any other anti-seizure meds., this med. is useful/effective to other problem, especially 'Pain' and 'Migrain,' ... from the reading.
Besides this, Neurontin is more likely 'add on med.' to other mood stabilizer.
The very first-line mood-stabilizer is to be 'Depakote,' that is most popular/likely prescribed.
I have no idea why your pdoc. rxed Neurontin for your condition, as seeing you surely have Bipolar symptoms from the description of your previous post.

What is your psychiatric history? That's the most important thing. Neurontin is not as "first line" as, say, lithium or divalproex as a mood stabiliser. You may well need an antidepressant, but the dose probably needs to be lowered. Antidepressants, apart from causing switching (from depression to mania), also cause rapid cycling (flip-flopping of mood). It can be impossible to lead an effective life while this is going on.

Good luck.

Topamax is another anti-seizure that's great for sleep and mood stabilization. It's what my PDoc has me on now for nights.
