meds that improve sexual function

Posted by mikef on January 13, 2004, at 16:13:57

Could someone list some medications I could ask my psychitrist to prescribe me that would improve my sexual function?

Yeah take all those and then go nuts with the side effects.

Why didn't Viagra make the list?

I don't know if this helps but I have noticed that L-tyrosine improved my sexual functioning. I have used it with meds (Imipramine)a couple of times and it worked wonderfully. It's over-the-counter but I don't know if it can be used safely in combination with meds ... can anybody illuminate me on this point ?

No need for sarcasm. These medications are more and more commonly employed these days to reverse med-induced sexual dysfunction as patients are more willing to discuss this issue with their doctors. I've tried all but three or four of the meds I listed and don't have a bad word to say about any of them (except that Mirapex made me sleepy and Wellbutrin caused anxiety, but those are individual issues).

I assume the sexual dysfunction is antidepressant-related, which is why I didn't bother mentioning Viagra. It's typically useless for treating this type of sexual dysfunction as the problem is (much more often than not) difficulty achieving orgasm -- not erection.

It certainly makes sense that l-tyrosine would be helpful in overcoming sexual problems as it is a precursor to phenylalanine, which in turn is a precursor to levodopa -- the catecholamine which is converted directly into dopamine. Levodopa is one of the drugs I listed in my former post -- it is normally used to treat Parkinson's patients, as they suffer from death of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra region in the brain. Most of the prescription medications used to treat sexual dysfunction of this nature increase dopaminergic function. And l-tyrosine should be safe to take with any medications, though these things should always be discussed with a doctor. It is an essential amino acid found in many of the foods we eat, so I don't see how there could be an interaction.

Thanks for your explainations Ame, you seem very well informed. I will discuss L-tyrosine with my doctor but it's encouraging to know that there shouldn't be controindications. Do you know something about the usage of Remeron to counteract sexual side effects induced by other meds ? How is it supposed to work ?

I started desipramine a week ago and I have noticed weaker erections and orgasms from the very first day on a very low dosage (12,5 mg). I then added Remeron but I don't think it's helping that much. My penis seems less sensible, just like me, but I don't desparate to find a good combo that won't mess up my sexual life. Thanks in advance

How much Buspar

I would like to know how much Buspar to take for sexual side effects from Lexapro. I am on 60 mg/day and had no effect.

That's highly individualized, and there's no guarantee Buspar will work for you. Normally you start at 15mg/daily and work your way up. If I were you though, I would choose Wellbutrin or (especially) a psychostimulant as they almost always help. 5-10mg of Ritalin or an amphetamine an hour before sexual activity can work wonders.

There's also Periactin (cyproheptadine), an antihistamine with antiserotonergic properties that is sometimes used on an as-needed basis to reverse antidepressant-induced sexual side effects. However, it also reverses the positive effects of the medication momentarily.

ARGININE (amino acid) for sexual satisfaction

In reply to Re: meds that improve sexual function, posted by cybercafe on January 15, 2004, at 7:16:30

I read this in Feb/04 issue of PREVENTION magazine. I just started taking it this week. Purchased 180 caps of 500mg at GNC for $18.49. If anyone knows where you can get it cheaper, let us know. I think I saw a post that MAXIMUS is taking it too.

The claim: "sex vitamin" boosts sexual satisfaction in men and women.

The research: In a 6-week study of 50 men, 5,000 mg of arginine daily relieved erectile dysfunction. A 4-week study of 77 women taking 2,500mg of arginine daily found increased sexual desire, orgasm frequency, and clitoral sensation.

Daily dose: 1,500 to 5,000 mg

How it works: Arginine helps synthesize nitric oxide, which increases blood flow to the genitals, promoting sexual arousal-erection in men and enlarged clitoris in women.

Pros: Preliminary evidence suggest it may work.

Cons: No significant side effects; some people experience mild blood pressure drop.

Bottom line: Seems to boost flagging sexual function in both men and women.

I tried Wellbutrin and trazodone. Unfortunately, I had an allergic reaction to both of them. A doctor told me that antihistamines such as benadryl and Vistaril may help too. However, these drugs make one very tired. I haven't noticed a difference with those either. Lexapro has totally made it impossible for any orgasms in my case. It has been literally months, since I have had one. I am allergic to most antidepressants. I am in a really big dilemia. I have major depression. So does that mean taking a medication that eliminates all possibility of sexual enjoyment with no alternatives? That's depressing in itself.

I agree that it is depressing in itself. There are still alternatives. Take a look at this discussion: http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/20040109/msgs/299076.html

I have spent a total of about two and a half years on a TCA (nortriptyline) and have experienced no sexual side effects. It is a very effective antidepressant. Remeron is another option, although I'm not sure Remeron on its own is as effective an AD as a TCA.

So is it working fo you yet? (nm) » polarbear206
