Lexapro and alcohol

Posted by vonnie on January 2, 2004, at 22:34:19

I have been taking Lexapro for 4 weeks at 10mg dosage. On new years eve I drank alcohol and had the most horrible experience with it. Two days later I am still sick. I missed my dosage that night too and havent felt right since. Anyone else had a bad experience like this? How long will it take me to feel better? thanks

I'm an ardent drinker (tho not an alcoholic) and find that indeed, Lexapro and alcohol are a nasty combination.

The alcohol seems to bring out Lex's worst side effects: nervousness, anxiety, insomnia, vivid dreams, someetimes bad dreams. I never have these on Lex when I'm not drinking.

Today is my last "holiday" day and I will have dinner at a nice restaurant with my spouse. We will have wine and cocktails. After tonight I'm going completely on the wagon (not a problem for me) and will let the Lexapro do its job.

After just over two weeks I have very high hopes for Lexapro. My outlook is already much better.

Good luck! -- John in California

Thanks for the response John. I couldnt believe the reaction I had to alcohol while on this med. I totally blacked out, couldnt even walk, it was horrible. I will stay away from it for a while to avoid that happening again. I've been on this for almost a month and am not sure if things are better or not. Sometimes I feel good, but sometimes I dont. I'm hoping that I see an improvement soon.

It could take 6 to 8 weeks befor you feel Lex begin to work....for me it was 9 weeks. Good news is it can only get better from here, you've got just a little further to go.

Hang in there!~~~8|8

Thanks for the encouragement, but how exactly did you know that the Lex had finally kicked in? How did it make you feel different? I dont really know what to expect. The only thing I have noticed so far is that this month, the PMS that I usually get really bad, was better. Two weeks ago my doc increased my dosage to 10mg, I felt like I had the flu for two weeks now, but I have noticed that other people have experienced this s/e. I'm finally starting to feel better, good thing i was off work for the holidays, I couldnt imagine having to go to work in my condition. I slept away most of my two week vacation. I cant wait for this to get better. thanks : )

I had the Lex flu so bad I couldn't get out of bed and had to call in sick to work whole second week.

As to how do you knowit's working........I kept waiting for something *BIG* to happen that I would wake up and BE DIFFERENT. Nothing....then week 9 came and I thought this is NOT working......and I was sitting on the couch w/hubby watching TV and I found myself laughing and feeling GOOD, I mean really good, and that was IT!!! It's really helped a lot, but its not a *miracle* drug, I still have up days and down days, the downs are just not so terrible and I can get through them. The Lex kind of *evens* things out for me. PMS is almost non-existent!

Hope it works as well for you!~~~8|8

I'm also on Lex and waiting for it to kick in. It's nice to know that other people are playing the waiting game. I also felt like I had the flu (my doctor said it had nothing to do with the Lex - if this is such a common side effect why haven't any health professionals heard of it?) Best of luck. I hope it kicks in for you soon!

Thanks! I hope it works for me too. I've been waiting for something *big* to happen too, in fact my friend just asked me how "it" was working and I didnt know how to answer her. I havent really noticed a big change. Yesterday I had a really bad day, I was so depressed it wasnt even funny. I havent felt like that in a while, but was kind of disappointed to even have a day like that, made me wonder if this (the depression) will ever go away completely. I've read how some people have increased their dosage, I wonder if that is by doctors orders or do they take it upon themself to up the dosage? I go back for my 6 week check up soon, I guess I will let him evaluate the situation. Today is a good day, I'm actually being productive at work for the first time in a while, even before my vacation I wasnt this interested in actually doing my job. Thanks for the input and as Kathrynlex put it, it really is nice to know there are other people out there who are experiencing the same things. V

Thanks Kathrynlex, I hope it kicks in for you too. That flu thing was horrible, I havent felt that sick in a long time, and it lasted so long. I didnt go to the doctor and it really didnt dawn on my that it was only since my dosage was increased did I feel so sick. I'm glad that is over with. good luck

Vonnie -
One more note on this subject for you. I posted this somewhere earlier today I think. I didn't have a BIG moment in particular when I knew the Lex was working, but I'm not extremely sad, angry, suicidal at all or overly anxious anymore.

Here are some benchmarks I noticed:
* I finally filled all the soap dispensers at all my sinks at home
* I made decent dinners for my family 3 nights in a row (instead of maybe once a week)
* I dusted my dresser for the first time in 2 years
* I didn't blow up at my daughter last night when she was sassy and disobedient.

I think it's a gradual thing, but I can say I am much happier, peaceful and able to participate emotionally with my family and get things done at work a little easier than I did 3 months ago!

Hope that helps and that you will see measurable progress soon - but you may have to look for the small things :-)

~ Lynne

Thanks Lynne, I guess it's the small things that matter. I was thinking that I was doing better until yesterday and today. Yesterday the whole day was shot and today started off good, but by mid afternoon, I was a mental mess. I just started taking my med in the morning, rather than at bedtime, because i was tired of not sleeping and I was hoping that would help. Could that be affecting me? Today I went from very high to a very low, almost crawling out of my own skin. I'm better this evening but earlier was a mess. I'm so tired of being this way.
