Your experience, celexa combined with risperidone

Posted by Stann on December 30, 2003, at 19:48:02

I am currently taking 20mg celexa,1.75mg Risperidone for severe scocial anxiety and depression.I have a lot of intrusive thoughts and ruminating thoughts. Celexa was not working well enough on its own, so riperidone was added about 2 month ago.Risperidone began working very soon after starting it, giving me hope that this cobination of meds will work. What is happening is the risperidone has to be increased every one to two weeks because the good effect keeps waring off. I am becoming discouraged and feeling as if the risperidone will not work as well as it had at the beginning of the treatment with this drug. I appreciate any feed back on this combination or any similar combination of medicines. Please, if possible, tell me your doses of each med.
Also I take 5mg valium and 7.5mg imovane before bed.

Thanks,

Stann....

Hmm, I was actually thinking of adding risperdal to my Celexa. Even after 2 years on Celexa, I still can't really sleep properly. I can post about my experiences if this happens.

Hi Stann.

What exactly are the good effects that risperidone brings you? Which effects wear off?

For depression, 1.0-2.0mg is usually effective as an adjunct to antidepressants.

For intrusive/delusional/psychotic thinking in the absence of schizoid disorders, 3.0mg is often necessary.

For schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder, 6.0mg is often the target dosage.

Dosages above 6.0mg are generally not recommended, as the risk of EPS and TD becomes significant.

Good luck.

Stann,

I am currently on 80 mgs of Celexa with good results. Lesser doses did not work for me. Has your pdoc ever discussed increasing your dose of Celexa?

If Risperdal isn't working, have you considered Zyprexa? It has a potential weight gain side effect, but it really helped me with ruminative thoughts.

Best of luck and take care.

I am sensitive to ADs and respond to them usually with side effects. It worries me to increase the celexa, but will try an increase if I have too.

Zyprexa is an option. I did try Seroquel and Olanzapine on their own, but with no luck.

Stann,

The good effects are my anxiety and other symtoms I mentioned in my orignal thread go away. Plus, I was having great energy and actually woke in the morning feeling like I had slepted. It was wonderful not having my brain working in overdrive all the time. Now, I am back to feeling tired and lethargic.

Even though Celexa dose not make me tired, I take it at bed time. The increase in serotonin helps me sleep.

What is your reason for taking celexa? and what is your dose? (If you do not mind saying).

Hi,

I think it took me about 4 weeks to feel better. Hopefully you can wait it out and stick with it.

Best of luck...

Hi,Girl
many thanks for the encouraging words and thinking about YOUR experience it seems that I MUST manage waiting for the "happy end" as if reached,it worth it.
I permit myself asking you 2 more questions:
1-talking about approx.1 month are you referring for the dose you are now on,or since you started celexa?
2-have you augmented it with Klonopin to overcome anxiety and in case you have, with which doses?

wishing you a healthy New Year
Paul

Hi Paul...Happy New Year to you!

I believe that I started out on 40 mgs of celexa with little relief, at which time the dose was doubled and I finally started to feel even better. It was about 2 weeks after the increase before I finally felt like "myself" again.

As for klonopin, I was on it for 3 yeas before we realized that it had a paradoxical effect on me. Instead of soothing my anxiety, it caused me to feel angry and irritable. I have not heard about this effect on anyone but me, so you may want to give it a shot. Just keep in mind that the withdrawal can be painful, so try to take the lowest dose that works. I was on a huge dose for years and really suffered when I came off it.

Best of luck to you and please let me know if you have any other questions.

:) Girl
