Drugs to help FEEL

Posted by scatterbrained on November 5, 2003, at 19:58:58

I have been taking for the last few days, a low dose of geodon(20mg),smallest available dose I might add, and it has been working great but there is a significant chance that I may have to stop it due to some potentially serious side effects.I have had terrible reactions to all anti-depressants and this drug has been the only one I can truly tollerate. And the only drug that seems to help my depression by INCREASING my emotion, not blunting it like the ssris have done.what I want to know is if there are any other drugs(from anyones personal experience) that seem to increase emotion because thats all need, I don't need to be happy or content or optimistic, just productive and able to FEEL!

Fish oil helped me feel emotion better.

Inositol is probably your answer. Take 2 grams of this a day. This *really* made me feel emotion better. It gave me chills down my spine at the sound of emotional songs (havn't felt that way in a long time)

Ive been taking nardil and its working pretty good so far except for some minor side effects . I have only been on it 4- 5 weeks so im looking for it to get better. I do believe nardil and parnate both have an energizing effect and give you more motivation. The ssri's gave me that blunted no emmotion feel . I would suggest you talk to someone on the board named ACE he is very knowledegable about the mao's

A lot of what I've read indicates that emotional intensity has a strong correlation with the novelty of one's environment. Your thoughts are influenced by your immediate environment, and your brain has a stockpile of emotional connections to environmental cues. The fewer cues your brain can find to its current environment, the more emotion can range freely. This is why children have a much deeper daily emotional experience than adults.
Things like music, unusual surroundings, drugs, and activity can elicit such emotional arousal. Someone could also access emotions by thinking about past unusual events, or putting themself in a setting where they had previously experienced strong emotions.
The problem, then, is largely one of environmental routine, and an overly hardwired response table to it. The vast majority of who you are and how you act are determined by systems out of your concious control, and formed automatically when you were a child. Understanding how you can plainly influence these systems is more useful than any concious thoughts about them.

I found the anti-convulsants Neurontin and Lamictal to have this effect on emotion. They made me feel chills easily and cry almost too easily when there were emotional scenes on television, etc. It might be the effect you are looking for, though. If I recall any other drugs I've been on that had this effect, I'll post them for you. The MAOIs and moclobemide don't have the numbing effect, but I don't know if I'd say they amplify emotion or not.

Good Luck,
Jon :)

I agree with you that enviornmental routine has a huge impact on emotion. However, depression can sort of blunt the "cues" that normally evoke emotion in people such as music, sex, etc, Depression(at least my form) is not just a feeling of sadness, Infact, I don't feel sad at all, I don't feel anything. It's a numbness and a vagueness and an inability to think straight and concentrate that only drugs, for better or worse, can help.

Have you ever tried Parnate? I've read descriptions of depression by people who've responded to Parnate that sound similar to what you describe.

I recently started (and stopped) taking 20mg of Geodon. It made me feel really weird, like I was out of it or having a permanent depersonalizatione episode. Do you like it? Notice any side effects?
Elle
By the way, Clonazepam (Klonopin) makes me cry regularly.

PROVIGIL????

How about provigil? Theres an anxiety component to this whole thing that I have so I don't know if a Psuedo-Stimulant would be the best thing for me. Although, I've heard it has some anti-anxiety components,Right? And has it helped anyone with FEELING.anyway I've stopped the geodon, the risks out way the benifit.I've been having some really troubling physical problems after started geodon that are actually more than troubling and closer to just plain scary. But i NEED something and now I need to check out this physical stuff, ugh. cant they f!#$king safer drugs. Some of these drugs are great but not safe.

Have you tried Adderall?

I can certainly relate to your emotional flatness as well as your "scatterbrain." I have been struggeling with it since I was 16(23 now) and the only drug that ever helped was Adderal(stimulant for ADD). After taking it just once, life began to surge back through me and my mind began to clear. Unfortunately it stopped working for me when I started drinking again(only two or three times). No doctor has been able to tell me why. However if you haven't tried Adderall or something similar I would recommend considering it. PS- I had to convince my doc to let me try it because it is for attention defecit and not depression. Let me know if you want to know anyhting else about it or my experience.
