PMS,Peri-Menopause Effexor XR?

Posted by Isabel on October 19, 2003, at 16:32:58

I have my new prescription for Effexor XR which I have not filled yet and am contemplating it's use.
This drug is being recommended by OBGYN Dr. for the symptoms above. Feeling tired, sleeplessness, hard time concentrating, very emotional (sad)and some hot flashes for 2 weeks out of the month. My OBGYN said this drug is just becoming popularly prescribed for these female symptoms. Have never taken an anti-depressant before. My therapist said I should try it. Finally got the script from my regular M.D. for 37.5 mg once a day.
Had to come here to find out info on it and appreciate all the postings. Now I will look for an alternative. Anyone have natural remedies for depression and PMS symptoms? I cannot take anything that increases estrogen, since, I've recently had estrogen positive breast cancer.
Thanks for any advice.

If your doctor recommends it you should try it... You have nothing to lose and you might feel better than you have in a long time... You can always go off of it if you don't like the results...

Effexor definately worsened my PMS (see "anyone get bad mood swings on Effexor xr?" post below for details) I thought they were prescribing Prozac or Wellbutrin for PMS??

I don't mean to make your decision harder! If your doctor thinks it may work for you, just give it a try....every drug has SO MANY different effects for different people, that it is so hard to say how you, personally, will react to a drug.

Good luck!

Isabel,

If you go to PUBMED and type in PMS or Peri-Menopause, you will see many different studies done on the topic. Just about any SSRI or SNRI, will help minimize the symptoms of PMS. From experience, I can say that Celexa got rid of all my PMS problems. What I thought was strange is it even got rid of the sore breasts and water retention. But it definitely didn't get rid of the fatigue, I think it made it worse. I tried every natural remedy there was and nothing worked like Celexa for PMS. I was scared shitless to try an Anti-depressant, but once you get through the first 2 weeks of some really "funky" side-effects, it is no big deal. Now I am willing to try any one of them.

I am now taking Manerix, and I like the energy I get from it, but it doesn't get rid of the PMS, even though they have done some studies on it, and they said manerix helps PMS, but it doesn't help mine. So now I am looking to try maybe some other AD, but what is the million dollar question.

If I was you I would research a bit more, and don't be afraid to try an anti-depressant, especially if you are very stressed right now.

Good Luck.

Please get your hormone levels checked!!!!!!!! Estradiol, FSH and testosterone. If you have never been depressed before, it is probably just declining hormone levels. I would check the levels before I started taking an antidepressant. Same thing happened to me and after five years of being on antidepressants and having only minimal success, I am just now learning how to straighten out my very low hormone levels. They are your foundation for a healthy rest of your life. Get the book 'It's My Ovaries, Stupid' by Elizabeth Vliet. It's full of fantastic information that doctors don't share with you. Good lUck to you!
