Anyone else on effexor + lamictal

Posted by DFMP on October 20, 2003, at 12:55:15

Anyone here on effexor xr + lamictal for bipolar? My 15 yr old is on this mix and I have serious doubts. She is very unstable and self-injurious. Pdoc has agreed to wean effexor and increase lamictal. Unfortunately, in desperation, daughter has quit all meds cold turkey two days ago. Waiting for the fall-out. I have heard about the symptoms of effexor withdrawal. What about lamictal?

I am taking Effexor XR and Lamictal for bipolar, and have received no relief/response from the Lamictal. The Effexor is working great for the depression. I'm sure I will be coming off of the Lamictal this week, and starting something else. Depakote worked REALLY well for me, but it caused too much hair loss. Your daughter should NOT stop the Effexor cold turkey!! Her bipolar symptoms, along with the withdrawal from the Effexor could definately cause some intense problems! Try to persuade her to continue the Effexor and to SLOWLY reduce the dosage, just so she can avoid the "brain-zaps", confusion, nausea, etc.
Good luck and keep me posted.

Unfortunately, no one can seem to persuade her to start meds again. She is giving up. Depakote worked well for her, but she started refusing it because of the extreme hair loss and weight gain. We're not sure yet if Lamictal is working because there'a a possibility it's the Effexor that's causing her problems with suicidal ideation and self-injury. We're just holding our breaths hoping she'll restart her meds. If she's off too many days, we have to start everything from scratch ---- assuming she restarts at all. Thanks for your support.
