Anyone get bad mood swings on effexor xr?

Posted by april8 on October 20, 2003, at 11:30:49

yesterday I got horrible mood swings, wanted to die, then felt fine, then wanted to die, then wanted to smash my friends cell phone (which would make you laugh if you knew me because I am like a teddy bear)
has anyone had this side effect from effexor xr? please write me if you have and let me know. DID IT PASS? I feel okay this morning but am bracing myself in case it happens again, scary. I want to stay on this drug though because I was on paxil before and gained too much weight.
thanks in advance,
April

Hi April8,
I've been on Effexor Xr for over a year, and it has definately worsened my PMS mood swings!! About every other month, I fall apart, get enraged at the littlest thing, feel hopeless during the 2 weeks I'm premenstrual. I wasn't like this before. Then, once the PMS is over, I'm back to feeling the best I've felt on any other AD! If you haven't been on it long, give it some time, because there are some funky side effects from Effexor, that went away (for me) with time.

Hi again april8~when I first started on Effexor, I felt the same way. However, I was also on Lamictal at the same time and that really balanced out my *moods*. The feelings you describe that I can relate to DID PASS *for me*.
Remember too, that if you really start to 'spiral down', to let your prescribing doctor be aware, maybe he/she can offer you something else. I know *for me* that Celexa didn't cause me to gain weight. Paxil did, but I had an allergic reaction so if I would have stayed on it, I'm sure I would have gained more.
Hang in there teddy bear!:-)
