Topamax: worsen anxiety/depression in kids?

Posted by Eileen_in_Texas on October 20, 2003, at 10:59:57

I just started my 11 year old son on 25mg Topamax daily for migraines. I noticed an immediate worsening of his previously existing anxiety and depression symptoms; such as he was scared to go outside at all and his fear of spider webs got worse too. Lots of moaning and crying.

He's also on Luvox and Imipramine. I know from this board that high doses of Topa seem to make anxiety worse, but anybody have experience with a low dose doing that?

What else is effective for migraines that would not cause weight gain or weight loss?

Eileen

Is he too young for Imitrex (sumatriptan)? When i got migraines it worked like a miracle, even if the migraine was already in progress. Good luck in finding what works. My son had them when he was small too, and it is heartbreaking. Take care, Melodie
