Effexor has not been shown to stunt growth or impair mental development, so I can't imagine why teenagers would need a different dose than older adults.

Effexor is an ideal antidepressant for teens because it seems to work for some of their ADD/ ADHD and Anxiety disorders.

My daughter is almost 15. She's been on 225 mg of Effexor XR and 30 Mg of Adderal for a little over a year. She splits the dosages of both... 150 mg of Effexor and 20 mg of Adderal in the am and the rest after school. It hasn't impacted her sleep at all. However, she's in the process of weaning off the Effexor, as she started to 'relapse' into depression again. We're now down to 18.75 mg of the Effexor, and she's still on the previously mentioned dose of Adderal. Things seem to be much better now. Jerz

I was taking 300mg EffexorXR and 80mg Ritalin. At first I slept for short periods then woke up.
Later, I could not get up in the morning. Cured it all by going down to 150 Effexor.

> I've been taking 450mg (300 am & 150 pm)of Effexor XR (time-released) for about 6 months and was taking the non-XR before that, a year at least combined. I also take .3mg of Menest and 200 mg of Acyclovir each day. I suffer from chronic constipation. How lovely I know. I have incorporated more fiber in my diet, I drink lots of water. Most OTC laxatives such as Perdiem and Ducosate give me severe stomach cramps. Metamucil alone does nothing. My doctor has recently put me on a concoction of 2 Tbsp Milk of Magnesia + 1 Tbsp Mineral Oil + 1 Tbsp Metamucil twice a day. Mmmm sounds yummy huh? I don't like the idea of using Mineral Oil because I've read that its use strips the body of fat soluble vitamins. My skin is so dry now. I would like to know if anyone else is experiencing constipation from this drug and if so what are you doing about it? I appreciate any comments on this.

Tamar

My stomache really slowed down when I started the Effexor. Initially I was constipated. I added the more fibre and water like yourself, but my stomache still was slow. My doctor prescribed domperidone for me (it isn't available in the States but to my understanding there are alternatives) and this worked. It wasn't overnight though.

This medication had a side-effect that I didn't care for and the doctor prescribed an alternative which I didn't get filled. Instead I'm eating about half a cup of raw unsalted sunflower seeds, about four prunes and an orange, plus the regular stuff everyday. This is helping though the orange gives me cramps which I've always gotten from them.

GOOD LUCK

Willow, you might try 1/4 cup of flax seed each day. Not only is it good for constipation, but it also the same omega fatty acid that is being used in trials to see if it has a positive effect on depression (as the early evidence is pointing to) and is supposed to be good brain food. I crush the seeds in a little electric coffee grinder and eat them with peanut butter, or with cereal. They actually have a nice nutty flavour.

"They actually have a nice nutty flavour."

Sounds like a great idea with an added bonus. The first time I tried peanut butter, at the age of four, a clump got stuck on the roof of my mouth. Since then I haven't been able to bring myself to eat or drink anything with a nutty taste. : 0

In the morning it becomes kinda slimey, but if you drink it quick and chase it with a cup of water, it's ok. I did this three days in a row and nothing happened.
I put raw sunflower seeds in my salad everyday and I also eat an apple and an orange most days and raisins too. I guess I'm surprised that more people aren't having the same problem as I am. I have not tried anything at the health food store, perhaps I'll give that a try. Hey, thanks again.

Tam, you weren't eating enough of the flax seed. You need to use about 1/4 cup.

Willow--well it's not a strong nutty flavour. Just a tiny bit. If you put it in a non-nutty cereal, it probably wouldn't taste nutty at all. But yes, you should probably forget the peanut butter idea!

Magnesium 500mg-750mg plus 2000 mg of flax seed oil in the capsules is my solution.
Just the Magnesium 500-100mg alone does the trick. Magnesium also has a calming effect on me.

I have been looking all over the web for something like this. My mother was prescribed 2 75mg of effexor taken at night. She doesn't have a computer so she ask me to try find out some facts for her. She has been on it for about 2 months. She hasn't gotten a night of sleep. She has had at least two seizures a week.(she has never had a seizure in her life) She also has to take Lor Tab for her excessive pain. Has anyone ever experience seizure?? If you can't get sleep how does this help depression?? The workman's comp. are saying the seizures are from her injury, but I don't think so. 150mgs a day... is that alot??? Well maybe not.... I read Lisa taking 300.... Any ideas would help a great deal.
Thanks in Advance

My dr put me on 1 mg of xanex at night and during the day for anxiety and it has helped tremendously! I can't believe the nightmares that I have, everynight, constant, and wow! Afraid to sleep without my xanex although after a year I am afraid I am building a tolerance up to it because the nightmares are coming back and fast. taking two pills now to be rid of them. Good luck! Don't know whats up with the dreams but have read that they can be a side effect. :( Hugs! Snowdancer*

I have taken Effexor two different times. Once was years ago, and then I took the ER type about a year ago. I could never sleep when I took it. I had vivid, colorful dreams. This last time I had an unpleasant withdrawal period, eventhough I had only been taking it for about a month. I will try every other anti-depressant known to man before I try Effexor again. I do not remember having any muscle twitches and I did not have seizures. I hope you can find medicines that work without such unpleasant side-effects. Good luck.

> > Lorraine: I'm still trying to find the right "formula". What is titrate and how much do you take? When you take the magnesium, do you also take calcium? I know you're supposed to take them together, but I feel I'm defeating my purpose if I do that because calcium is constipating. I also don't know what the long term effects are of taking magnesium alone without calcium. I did start the flax seed oil capsuls but have a hard time remembering to take them (3 3x's a day). I thank you all for your suggestions and comments. What a great place to share information!

I just take magnesium. I take up to 1 gm a day. 500 mg once or twice a day. I don't take it with calcium. I think that you need to take magnesium with calcium for the calcium to be absorbed (I may be wrong on this)--since my purpose isn't calcium absorbtion, I just take the magnesium. I also read about something called "turkey rhubarb", which I haven't tried--it's some sort of seed that helps move things along. By titrate, I mean start at say 100 mg and see the effect, increase the mg until you are no longer constipated. If you find yourself having too many bowel movements a day, decrease the dosage.

I am using effexor for about 2 years 75mg/day, I am feeling good but I gained weight about 20lbs, my doctor said this is the side effect of effexor, it slows down metabolism, I tried dieting but I could not control my appetite, and now I can not do any workout because I feel very weak day by day and I am seriously thinking to quiet that.

I am on effexor for only 2 weeks and have really lost my appetite, I think I have even lost a couple of pounds. Prior to this I was on paxil for two years and it really made me eat all the time. effexor is having the opposite reaction which I really like. Plus I have read ALOT of people have lost weight on it, so I think it is okay with that. I have had mood swings, which I think may be related to the drug, but I am checking into that and hoping with an increased dose it will pass.

depends on the person and their metabolism...i am currently taking 300mg. effexor and 450mg. wellbutrin sr daily...when i first started the effexor my cravings for food and to binge eating went away. i have actually lost 5lbs. i just believe many people who gain weight on effexor aren't exercising and they visit the McDonalds drive through more than they should, trust me on this one. you know..i want 10 big macs with a large DIET coke. LOL
ayways if people actually do gain weight still through proper diet and excercise..there are other options out there such as phetermine, pure ephedrine hcl., etc. just make sure u have no heart problems before taking those drugs
hate to say this but i use methamphetamine every couple weeks for so and can EASILY lose 10lbs. within 2 days...no lies. it also helps my add because i can't afford to see a psychiatrist to prescribe me ritalin or dexadrine.
start taking the effexor, eat healthy, excercise daily(even if it's a 20 minute walk around the neighborhood) and u shouldn't have a problem. if u do start gaining weight or appetite increases..ask your doctor about generic phetermine..it really does help

My appetite decreased when I first started taking Effexor. I noticed a decreased craving for sweets also. Effexor was great for anxiety for me but terrible on my blood pressure. I can't imagine taking meth on top of Effexor and Wellbutrin. I'm not talking about morality issues. It just sounds like a sure-fire cocktail for a heart attack.
