How are people surviving with money for the meds??

Posted by leo33 on October 17, 2003, at 16:48:18

I have not been able to function or work for years and am basically broke and have my parents helping me for money. I dont understand how everyone is functioning so well when i can barely care for myself and don't seem to care to either. Can someone explain how people afford to live?

I borrowed a lot of money from my parents for medical expenses when i realized that without PROPER treatment (I had seen many doctors but no specialists, and I am someone only a specialist could help),I'd spend the rest of my life barely able to work 20 hours a week, completely unable to sleep or eat normally, feeling almost totally unable to function in the smallest way. I saw a specialist who advised me to apply for disability and Medicaid. Didn't get the disability, but i did get medicaid benefits, which is a good thing considering a month's medications come to over $350. I am able to function now and may not need another year of Medicaid since I may get a job that has medical benefits. That was something I couldn't dream of when my disorders were untreated.
I will tell you, though, that even with some help from my parents (they did not understand my condition and still don't, but it matters less now) the time of month when i needed to refill my scripts was always a tough time financially; i was incredibly thankful when my health insurance card came in the mail :)

Hmmm that is interesting. I didn't know med companies had such programs. I'm mostly interested in Provigil, which is VERY expensive - I see it is covered by this "free drug program". Could you let me know what are the steps to obtain such medication? If you don't mind, what meds are you receiveing and what did you have to do to acquire them from the program?

Do you need to:
1) have RX from your pdoc
2) fill out company "free drug program" application
3) wait for their decision
4) if the company agrees - send them RX
5) receive the medication from them

Is that correct?
Thanks.

Yes, read the webpage. Each pharmaceutical company has their own particular schtick for obtaining the meds. You can't get them for free just for the hell of it, you must have a seriously low income and prove sufficient need.
I always figured that if you don't have parents to fall back on, you have to support yourself somehow so you do! Sounds awfully simplistic, but then again I have never had anyone to fall back on so I have had to do it myself.

And why in the heck should not they have restrictions ???? Everytime I post this link
all I get back is people complaining. Do you want
cheap meds or do you just want to complain ?

Just to be clear here, I am in totall agreement with you. There are far too many people who have learned how to play the system with either mental illness or d & a abuse.
