Hypothyroid and ultradian cycling???

Hi Anyone,
I've recently come across some info regarding hypothyroidism is a culprit of rapid cyclers. It states that most people with rapid cycling do have adequate levels of thyroid hormone in the blood, but they may respond well to treatment with thyroid hormone medication regardless of their initial blood levels.
Anyone with this experience?
I've just recently been told by a nutritionist doctor that he thinks i'm hypothyroid, although my basic test of TSH is in the normal range. I have low blood pressure, cold hands and feet, feel spacy and groggy upon awakening (always have - no medication influence) and I'm easily fatigued. I am also a rapid cycler.
I'd appreciate anyone's feedback.
thanks!
Katia

Hi Katia,

It's certainly a possibility. A lot of hypothyroiders get depressed, and I know that when I forget or can't take my Synthroid, I get pretty grumpy and low. Just be careful that they start you on a LOW dose... it builds up in your system slowly over time and it can be a while to see improvement. I was on too high a dose, which messed with my hormones, which caused my depression I think... and now I'm fighting Celexa withdrawal. A very slippery slope. However, if you get checked regularly by a responsible endocrinologist, it can help a lot. And if you're sensitive to synthetic hormone, there's Armour Synthroid, which is extracted, and it has a much shorter half-life.

Yes,
I've heard about Armour. The thing is, I don't have insurance and can't afford an endo doc. It would have to be a trial and error for me. At the moment, i just started taking my morning temp. to see if it's consistently low.
We'll see how that goes.
thanks.

I am only depressed, not bipolar, but I had the same symtpms as you do, and a normal blood test for hypothyroid. I started cytomel and it really helped. You should try it.

Hi,
What is cytomel? Aren't there different meds depending on which T is out of whack, i.e. T3 T4? I'm completely ignorant in this department.

Also, if your blood test was normal and you had the symptoms, who gave you the idea to start taking thyroid meds? In other words, how did it dawn on you that hypothyroid was probably what it is for you?
Are you also taking antidepressants? Do you think it "comorbid" as in it's not JUST the hypothryoid that's caused you to be depressed, but depression as well(that is treated with ADs)?
thanks.
Katia
