What meds would be good for me? Please Help!

Posted by bluesilvy on October 17, 2003, at 22:48:43

I recently had my first severe panic attack. I have had what I believe to be GAD for a couple of years now. Ever since this major panic attack, I am CONSTANTLY worrying about having another one. Especially when I am at home or driving by myself. Sunday, while watching football by myself, I suffered from a minor P.A. Right in the middle of the P.A., my girlfriend came home and I instantly felt better. I am going to see my doc on WED. and I am hoping he can give me something to calm me down. I do take .5mg of Ativan when I am feeling uneasy but I feel like a higher dosage probably help me more. Does anybody have the same or similair problem as this??? What meds do you take and doo they work??? PLEASE HELP!

-You're doing the right thing about seeing your pdoc! He/she should have some help for you.

It's normal for GAD to continue over time, and if left untreated, become worse and result in panic attacks. It sounds like you are now suffering from "anticipatory anxiety" where you have anxiety about possibly having another panic attack.

I've been taking 10mg Lexpro for 3months now due to GAD and panic attacks. It has helped me tremendously! Instantly helped my anxiety lesson and I haven't suffered from a panic attack since. There are many AD's out there to treat this disorder - you just have to find what works best for you. If interested in learning about lexapro, just go and read past posts. It has done wonders for many!!

Good Luck!!

Hi, sorry to hear you're going through this!
If you want, talk to your doctor about Effexor, it is approved for GAD, and it worked well for *me* when I took it. I had no anxiety at all.
A higher dose of Ativan may help you more, but that's something you and your prescribing doctor need to discuss that would benefit *you* the most.
I take Klonopin and it helps *calm* me down when I need it, and I take it to sleep as part of my 'medication cocktail' I also take Lexapro which has also helped *me* a lot with anxiety.

All the best to you on Wednesday with your doctor, keep us posted:-)

I took Klonopin for my panic attacks, first on a maintenance dose, then slowly reducing the dosage as I learned Cognitive Behavioral techniques. I have not needed a Klonopin since (although I do keep them around for anxiety/sleep problems). My panic attacks came "out of the blue" and were fierce and intense. I was agoraphobic for 2 years before I knew what was happening to me. By the grace of God I was referred to a Phobia center (check to see if there is one in your area) and through weekly therapy with a CB therapist, I learned the cognitive techniques to change the way I thought about the attacks, and what thinking leads up to them.

Anyhoo, just my 2 cents. Also, the book "Feeling Good" by David Burns is my "bible" and got me through many a tough time.
